Printable Version Leading the Industry on Alternative Energy Transportation – Some Facts
The FedEx drive to use more fuel-efficient, alternative energy vehicles began a long time ago. FedEx was the first express distribution company to make a long-term commitment to introduce hybrid-electric delivery trucks into the market and continues to work with vehicle manufacturers to develop and trial the latest hybrid technologies in commercial settings. The scale of this commitment is underlined by some compelling facts and figures:
- The FedEx hybrid truck fleet has travelled over 3.2 million kilometres, helping to eliminate 950 tons of greenhouse gas emissions
- On average, FedEx hybrid vehicles improve fuel economy by 42%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30%, and cut particulate pollution by 96%
- FedEx operates the largest fleet of commercial hybrid trucks in the express distribution industry and is placing an additional 75 hybrid vehicles into service across Europe and the U.S.
- With these additional vehicles, FedEx will operate more than 170 hybrid vehicles around the globe
- More than 25% of the FedEx fleet has been converted to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, saving more than 50 million gallons of fuel
- In addition, FedEx has more than 250 LPG and electric-powered ground support equipment in use at its Paris hub and other operational facilities across Europe. Another 75 are on order.
FedEx will continue to lead the industry through its commitment to effective environmental management through investment in new technology and making its infrastructure and operations more efficient.
The FedEx hybrid-electric vehicles are part of a broader sustainable transportation strategy that includes the use of cleaner-technology vehicles, efficiently sized vehicles, optimising routes, and new fuel-efficient aircraft.
