FedEx was tasked with transporting a Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) from the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History some 2,000 miles away in Washington D.C.
The successful completion of this exercise required a high level of logistical know-how, the use of cutting-edge technology and a considerable amount of planning and close liaison with both museums to ensure the most appropriate placement of the bones on pallets and to develop a safe and secure packing method.
Once the plans had been finalised we used GPS technology to identify the optimal route to get the T-Rex to its new home in Washington D.C. safe and sound in the quickest time possible. Apart from using a truck uniquely suited to transport this fragile and valuable shipment, we also employed our SenseAware sensor-based technology service to monitor and maintain - in near real-time visibility - the shipment’s integrity (temperature, exposure to light, location, humidity, shock and barometric pressure) throughout its four-day journey.
Over the years we have transported many other unusual shipments, ranging from live animals and fish to aeroplane engines, classic cars and antiques. As global business grows ever more connected, the need to ship valuable and sensitive cargo safely, securely and quickly will only increase. So next time you’re in a museum, or anywhere else in fact, gazing in wonder at something large, ancient and undeniably valuable, ask yourself how it got there in the first place—the chances are there’s a fascinating story to be told!
