FedEx Express has recently published its first annual Global Citizenship Report which outlines the company’s commitment to staff, customers, shareholders and communities in more than 220 countries and territories worldwide.Underlying FedEx’s business strategy is a firm corporate objective to meet customers’ needs and to further business opportunities by utilising and supporting responsible and sustainable policies and technologies at all times. Key highlights from the report include the following:
Environment & Efficiency
Since 2005 FedEx has cut its total carbon emissions by almost 0.5 billion kgs and by 2012 plan to make further improvements through reducing aircraft carbon emissions by 20 percent and increasing its vehicle fleet’s fuel efficiency by the same percentage. Notable initiatives include working with the U.S. Environmental Defence Fund, pioneering the development of commercial hybrid electric vehicles (FedEx uses more than 170 such vehicles worldwide) and investing in large-scale sustainable energy systems in both existing and planned logistics operations e.g. in Geneva and the new hub now under construction in Cologne.
Community & Disaster Relief
FedEx’s ability to respond quickly, efficiently and on a global scale makes disaster relief the cornerstone of its philanthropic efforts. FedEx also provides cash and in-kind donations in support of safety, health and education programmes, totalling more than 1.1% of its pre-tax profits last year.
People & Workplace
FedEx’s business success depends on the ability of its staff to realise their full potential and talents. Success in this aim is reflected in a full-time staff retention rate of 93.1%, women and minorities holding 38.6% of management roles, and employee engagement measuring 93.4%.
