We’ve just released our latest Global Citizenship Report (GCR) which tracks our efforts to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways.
The 2014 GCR shows that we continue to make significant strides in our commitment to minimising the impact of our operations on the environment. For example, since 2007 our Fuel Sense initiatives and aircraft modernisation programmes have collectively saved the company more than 330 million gallons of jet fuel, the equivalent of the contents of 500 Olympic-size swimming pools.
Other achievements detailed in the 2014 report include these highlights:
Our revenue grew by 3% and our operating margin rose to 7.6%. This successful performance allowed us to invest $6.5 billion in diverse supplier spending, including small, minority- and female-owned businesses, and to continue to provide trade education this year to more than 72,000 businesses in collaboration with the U.S. Commercial Service.
We managed to improve our vehicle fuel efficiency by an additional 2.5%, bringing the cumulative improvement from a 2005 baseline to 29.5%. Now that we have already nearly achieved our 2020 goal of 30% we now expect to surpass and then revisit that goal in 2015.
We also manage three European facilities that generate on-site solar energy: our distribution centre in Machelen, Belgium, our Cologne hub in Germany and our facility in Montpellier, France generate all together over a million of kilowatt hours per year equivalent to the electricity needs of 277 households on an annual basis.
FedEx donated its network and global shipping expertise to assist in the movement of more than 140 pallets of vital medical supplies to West Africa to counter the recent Ebola outbreak. In addition, FedEx provided more than £6.7m of charitable shipping and more than $45m in charitable contributions.
FORTUNE magazine again ranked FedEx as one of the “World’s Most Admired Companies”, and we maintained the top 20 ranking in their review of financial performance and corporate reputation that we have held since 2001.
A fundamental strategy for FedEx is to ensure that the more than 325,000 team members at the heart of our organisation remain fully focused on safety, to hold to the highest ethical and professional standards, and to be totally committed to the needs of our customers and communities.
In line with these continuing objectives FedEx has therefore just completed a robust operational analysis involving both internal and external stakeholders to help refine our global citizenship strategy and to ensure that we continue to address areas of maximum impact. The results of this assessment reconfirmed our current strategy, but we plan nevertheless to review these issues once again this year to ensure that we continue to successfully measure, implement and manage what matters most both now and in the future.
