What regulations do you have to comply with when dealing with Dangerous Goods?

DG items are subject to various and often complex types of safety legislation: ADR rules cover road transport throughout the European Union; IATA protocols apply to goods carried by air; separate requirements cover sea freight consignments; and individual countries can also enact laws specific to their own territory. Whatever legislation is concerned, though, it’s our job to make sure we’re aware of it and fully comply with it at all times.

How do all these requirements affect the day-to-day running of your warehousing operations?

We ensure that we provide 100% safety, from the moment we receive DG consignments through each and every handling, storage, shipping and transit stage until the goods reach their final destination. So we have to be alert every step of the way: that means being able to always detect items that might constitute a DG risk, clearly flag them, and then deal with them in line with all necessary safety protocols.

What type of goods and products constitute Dangerous Goods, and are there any items you are not permitted to handle?

Aside from a few special exceptions – such as explosives and radioactive materials – we make it our business to handle all types of DG materials and products in total safety and security. These can range from turpentine-based paints to sprays needed to remove labels, and from products required to remove dust from printers and sensitive machinery to aerosols that clean the laboratory equipment used to analyse agricultural products. Whatever the items involved, though – including lithium batteries and other similar items that may come onto the market as a result of technological advances – our customers can always rely on us to track new product developments and specifications to ensure that their goods are handled safely at all times. And if their goods need extra special care, we can handle that too to ensure total storage and transport safety.

What is your typical DG customer profile?

This can be very variable. Most of our customers have a very good knowledge of the relevant legislation governing the safe handling, storage and transport of their goods. However, those customers who have less experience with DG shipments can always rely on us to ensure that their goods are handled and delivered in accordance with all required safety protocols.

What do you think is the most important service that you have to offer to your customers?

Our over-riding aim is to give our customers complete confidence in our ability to deal with each and every DG consignment exactly as required, ensuring complete safety and security at all times. We also make it our duty to ensure that all such goods are safely dealt with by whoever is involved in their delivery – and that has to include non-FedEx carriers, too.
