Shipping Documentation - International

What is the difference between "document" and "non-document" or “product” shipments for international shipping?
A "document" shipment includes paper of little or no commercial value such as business correspondence, and generally doesn't require a Commercial Invoice. A "non-document" or “product” shipment defines all other shipments and printed materials of value. Examples include clothing, automobile parts, sports equipment, books, etc. All non-document international shipments require a Commercial Invoice.

What shipping documents do I need to ship a FedEx Express package internationally?
To ship a FedEx Express package to the U.S. or any other country outside Canada, you will need to complete an international air waybill. You can complete it online using FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.ca. Or you can use the FedEx International Air Waybill and print or type in the required information. You can order the FedEx International Air Waybill and other supplies online, or call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 .

All non-document international shipments also require a Commercial Invoice. It is the official transaction record between an exporter and an importer, and is relied on by customs officials to clear shipments across international borders. Gifts, videotapes, drawings, and all other non-document shipments, regardless of value, require a Commercial Invoice.

You may also require a NAFTA Certificate of Origin for shipments to Mexico or the U.S., and a Shipper's Export Declaration B13A. You can download or complete these and other commonly used international forms online.

For more information on how to prepare shipping documents to ship internationally, please visit our online   Shipping Guide. Additional forms may also be required for the different commodities you ship outside Canada. Please visit our Customs Tools section, or call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 for more details.

What shipping documents do I need to ship a FedEx Ground package to the U.S.?
You will have to prepare a FedEx shipping label. You can prepare your labels quickly online using FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.ca. Simply enter the required information, print out the shipping label on your laser printer, and affix it to the top of your package. When you process your last shipment of the day, print out the Ground Manifest Report directly from FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.ca and give it to your courier at pickup.

All non-document international shipments also require a FedEx Ground Commercial Invoice.

If you prepare your FedEx Ground packages manually you will need to:

  • Apply an address label to the top of the package. Include the zip code and recipient telephone number.
  • Affix a FedEx International Ground bar code on top of each package.
  • Complete and affix a blue FedEx Ground international shipment label to each package. You can number each package in the shipment in consecutive order in the box labelled 'Package #'. In the box labelled 'Total Pkgs in Shipment', record the total number of packages in the shipment.
  • Prepare and attach the customs documents. Include 5 copies of the Commercial Invoice in the FedEx Ground Pouch labelled 'Customs Documents Enclosed' and affix it to the first package in the shipment.
  • Complete the FedEx Ground Pickup Record. In the lower right-hand corner, total the number of packages shipped to the U.S. that day.

What shipping documents do I need if my international shipment is a gift?
In addition to the FedEx International Air Waybill, other customs forms may still be required for gift shipments to international destinations.  Follow these tips when shipping gifts:

  • The shipping documentation must be clearly marked “GIFT” and include a detailed description of the commodity to receive special import clearance handling at destination.  Note: this is only available for shipments to those countries that recognize special entry status for gift shipments; a maximum dollar amount for duty and tax exemption usually applies.  The description on the air waybill must also include a brief description of the contents, as required by customs, for example “gift shipment of books and various men’s clothing made of cotton.”
  • Many countries allow gifts to enter the country duty free if the value is less than a certain amount. This amount varies from country to country.
  • In some countries, the shipment must be sent person to person – with no company involvement or indication of involvement on the shipping documentation.

For more information on shipping restrictions for specific countries, please call FedEx Customer Service at 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339.

Dimensional Weight

When do package dimensions determine my rates?
Shipments in FedEx-provided packaging are not currently subject to dimensional weight pricing. Dimensional weight is a calculation of a shipment's weight based on the IATA volumetric standard instead of its actual weight.  To obtain a rate quote, you will need to provide shipment dimensions along with the actual weight of your shipment.

For FedEx Ground packages, please refer to the Dimensional Weight Rate Calculation for FedEx Ground Packages PDF.

How do I calculate dimensional weight?
For all FedEx Express shipments within Canada, and from Canada to any other country, dimensional weight is calculated by the following formula: Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) / 6000 kg, or Length (inches) x Width (inches) x Height (inches) / 166 lbs.

FedEx reserves the right to assess transportation charges based on volumetric standards for all shipments. This includes using the International Air Transport Association (IATA) volumetric standard for international shipments.

For FedEx Ground packages, please refer to the Dimensional Weight Rate Calculation for FedEx Ground Packages PDF.
