What is FedEx Electronic Trade Documents?

FedEx Electronic Trade Documents (ETD) is an international shipping solution that allows you to upload and electronically transmit your customs documents when you ship using FedEx Ship Manager™ at fedex.ca, FedEx Ship Manager™ Software and FedEx Web Services. You can choose to upload your own customs documents or let FedEx generate customs documents for you. Either way, they are submitted electronically.

Why should I use FedEx Electronic Trade Documents?

FedEx Electronic Trade Documents helps you save time, save money and save paper. Plus you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you’ll benefit from pre-clearance and proactive problem resolution.

International shipping will require less manual processing, helping to save you time. Reduce filing time and store documents online or on your computer, to easily reuse for future shipments.

What FedEx services support FedEx Electronic Trade Documents shipments?

FedEx Electronic Trade Documents shipments are supported for the following services:

  • FedEx International Priority®
  • FedEx International Economy®
  • FedEx International Priority Freight®
  • FedEx International Economy Freight
  • FedEx International First
  • FedEx International Ground

Can I use FedEx Electronic Trade Documents for shipments to all international destinations served by FedEx?

FedEx® Electronic Trade Documents shipments are currently allowed from Canada to the countries indicated below. FedEx Ship Manager will only show the FedEx ETD options when you are processing a shipment to a destination that allows inbound ETD shipments. View the list of available countries

Can I use FedEx Electronic Trade Documents if I have a dial-up Internet connection?

FedEx ETD functionality is designed to perform optimally with a high-speed, broadband Internet connection. Dial-up customers with slower data-transfer rates will experience long processing times. The use of FedEx ETD with a dial-up Internet connection is not recommended.

Can I use FedEx Electronic Trade Documents if I am not using FedEx as my broker for customs clearance?

Yes, you can transmit your documents electronically and still use your own broker. The process for using your own customs broker remains the same.

Which international trade or customs documents can be sent electronically using FedEx Electronic Trade Documents?

With FedEx ETD you can choose to use FedEx-generated documents or upload your own customs documents.

The following FedEx-generated documents are available:

  • Commercial Invoice (FedEx Ship ManagerTM at fedex.ca and FedEx Ship ManagerTM Software)
  • Proforma Invoice (FedEx Ship ManagerTM at fedex.ca and FedEx Ship ManagerTM Software)
  • NAFTA Certificate of Origin (FedEx Ship ManagerTM Software only)


You can choose to upload your own version of the above documents as well as most other ancillary customs documents you wish to accompany your shipment.

The B13A Export Declaration cannot be electronically transmitted with the shipment. It must be printed and attached to your shipment or sent electronically using the Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) provided by Statistics Canada.

NOTE: Applicable customs laws, rules and regulations may require additional documentation for certain commodities, values or quantities and/or original hard copy commercial invoices, licenses, or permits. It is the responsibility of the shipper to know when an original hard copy document is required and to place the original document in the pouch on the package. 

Some examples of these documents include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Manual B13A Declaration (B13A)
  • Electronic Export Declaration (B13A) when accompanied by an export permit
  • Export Permit (Must be provided when exporting controlled restricted/prohibited goods)
  • CITES Certificate (Must be provided when exporting endangered species of wild fauna and flora)
  • Kimberley Certificate (Must be provided when exporting rough diamond.)
  • E667 Forms (Must be provided when exporting monetary instruments of a value greater than 10,000 CAD)

Are original printed documents required for customs clearance?

When you upload your trade documents using FedEx Electronic Trade Documents, you do not need to include printed copies in the pouch with your shipments. You may choose to print copies for your personal records, and this functionality is available when you process your shipment.

NOTE: Applicable customs laws, rules and regulations may require additional documentation for certain commodities, values or quantities and/or original hard copy commercial invoices, licenses, or permits. It is the responsibility of the shipper to know when an original hard copy document is required and to place the original document in the pouch on the package. Can I transmit some documents electronically and include hardcopies of other documents when processing a FedEx Electronic Trade Documents shipment?

Yes. Although the destinations enabled for FedEx Electronic Trade Documents can clear customs with an electronically transmitted Commercial Invoice, some commodities, values or quantities may require an original invoice, license or permit. Just insert any hard copy documentation you have included into the pouch.

Can I use my own trade documents?

Yes, with FedEx Electronic Trade Documents you can upload your own trade documents from your computer. To learn how, use the Interactive Help Guide for FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.ca or for FedEx Ship Manager Software.

What file types are supported for my own trade documents?

Trade or customs documents for upload should be in one of the following file formats: .bmp, .doc, .docx, .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .png, .rtf, .tif, .txt or .xls. Document file names should not exceed 30 characters.

How large can my uploaded customs document files be?

Uploaded files should not exceed a file size of 1 MB each. Larger files may not upload or transmit successfully.

What are the file requirements for letterhead and signature images?

Image files must be in GIF or PNG file format.

For FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.ca: Letterhead images should be no larger than 700 pixels wide by 50 pixels high. Signature images should be no larger than 240 pixels wide by 25 pixels high.

For FedEx Ship Manager Software: Letterhead images should be no larger than 720 pixels wide by 154 pixels high. Signature images should be no larger than 336 pixels wide by 48 pixels high.

Can I add my own letterhead and signature to FedEx-generated trade documents?

Yes, you can upload your company letterhead and signature images to display on the FedEx-generated documents. FedEx recommends that you always use letterhead and signature images on FedEx-generated documents.
