Points to remember:
- Ensure that senders are aware that you are preparing a shipping label on their behalf.
- Make sure you have completed the necessary trade documents required for export from the origin country, as well as for import to the destination country. If you are uncertain about the documentation required, use the Customs Tools at fedex.ca. Select Find Find International Documents from the Customs Tools menu to find required and/or recommended documentation for your shipment.
- Ensure that a pickup has been scheduled or drop-off arrangements have been made.
- Use "FedEx Email Notifications". to ensure that the sender and recipient are aware of the shipment status.

Why wasn't I advised about duties and taxes when I made my purchase online?
When you are making an online purchase, clarify with the sender who the responsible party is for the payment of the duties and taxes. Please provide feedback to the company from which you made an online purchase if the duties and taxes were not communicated to you.
How do I pay for duties and taxes if I do not have a FedEx account?
If you, as the recipient, are the designated party for payment of duties and taxes and do not have a valid FedEx account number, or a FedEx account in good credit or standing, then payment will be collected by the FedEx courier at the time of delivery, in addition to a Reimbursement on Delivery (ROD) fee (see below). If the shipper or a third party is responsible for payment of duties and taxes and does not have a valid FedEx account number, or a FedEx account in good credit or standing, then the shipment will be held at the destination FedEx station until payment arrangements are made, or the FedEx Credit department has authorized release of the shipment.
NOTE: You can avoid having your shipment held for payment of duties and taxes by opening a FedEx account with a credit card.
Why am I being charged an Advancement Fee?
This fee applies to all shipments when FedEx pays duties and taxes to the Canada Border Services Agency on behalf of a customer. The fee is based on the total amount of duties and taxes advanced, and will be billed to the party designated to pay the duties and taxes. NOTE: You can avoid having to pay the Advancement Fee by opening a FedEx account with a credit card.
Why am I being charged a Reimbursement on Delivery (ROD) Fee?
The ROD fee is charged to customers who do not have a FedEx account number or who do not have a FedEx account in good credit or standing. This fee is collected from the recipient at the time of delivery, in addition to any duties and taxes that may be applicable. See the current ROD Fee at the Ancillary Clearance Services page.

Why am I being charged duty on goods imported from the United States? I thought Canada had a free trade agreement with the U.S.
Canada has free trade agreements with several countries, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Proof of origin is required in order to claim any beneficial duty rates for goods imported from any of the countries that Canada has free trade agreements with. Some reasons why the NAFTA rate of duty would not be applicable on a shipment from the U.S. are:
- The item was not manufactured in the U.S.
- A valid NAFTA Certificate of Origin was not provided for a commercial shipment valued at CAD$2500 or greater
- A signed statement was not provided on the commercial invoice for a commercial shipment valued at less than CAD$2500
- The applicable harmonized code did not qualify for the NAFTA rate of duty
I have ordered and received the same thing in the past and was not charged for duties or taxes. Why am I being charged this time?
There are several reasons why the rate of duty and amount could vary, such as:
- The value of the shipment
- The country of manufacture
- How the goods are described on the air waybill or customs documents
