Printable Version Canada Changes Import Permit Requirements for Certain Textiles and Clothing

April 1, 2005

Canada’s Export and Import Control Bureau (EICB) is advising importers, brokers, and other interested parties that, effective April 1, 2005, only those clothing and textile products that are eligible for a tariff preference level (TPL) benefit established under NAFTA (U.S./Mexico), CCFTA (Chile), or CCRFTA (Costa Rica) will be subject to import permit requirements.

This means that other than for TPL imports, import permits for clothing and textiles issued in accordance with the Export and Import Permits Act will no longer be required.  This significant change – which affects textiles and clothing imported into Canada – was brought about by amendments to the Import Control List established under the Export and Imports Permits Act.
