FedEx Superhub Site Ranks As World's Largest Cargo Airport In 2002

Memphis, Tennessee Airport reports 2002 growth rate of 28.8% over 2001.

MIAMI - July 29, 2003 - Memphis International Airport, location of the worldwide hub for FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company and global logistic solutions provider, has been ranked as the world's largest cargo airport in terms of cargo traffic, by the U.S. publication Air Cargo Magazine.

In 2002, cargo traffic totals for Memphis International reached 3,390,299 tons, a 28.8 percent growth over 2001. Memphis International was also listed as tenth on the list of the fastest growing airports for cargo traffic in 2002 among the world's top 200 airports.

The FedEx Express SuperHub in Memphis opened for operations in 1981 and is credited with jumpstarting the growth of Memphis International Airport. Two hundred FedEx Express aircraft fly in and out of Memphis daily, including those that connect Latin America and the Caribbean with the global FedEx network serving more than 210 countries. More than one million packages pass through the hub's sorting facilities every night; worldwide, FedEx Express transports more than three million packages daily, connecting countries that together generate 90% of the world's gross domestic product.

The list of the world's top 50 airports for air cargo in the July 2003 edition of Air Cargo Magazine is based on statistics from Airports Council International, which gathers its information from reports filed by airports. Air Cargo Magazine's report also lists FedEx Express as a notable cargo carrier at ten of the top 50 airports in the world.
