Federal Express Supports U.S. Relief Agency, Heart to Heart, Through Airlift to Chengdu in P.R.C.'s Sichuan Province

Global Express Network Expected to Spur Sichuan's Growth in International Trade

CHENGDU, April 14, 1997 - Federal Express (FedEx) today delivered xx tons of pharmaceutical and medical supplies to Chengdu in Sichuan province of the People's Republic of China in a mission organized by Heart to Heart International, a U.S. based medical relief organization. The shipment's contents are valued in wholesale prices at approximately U.S. $yyyy million.

The shipment arrived on board one of FedEx's DC-10 aircraft at Chengdu Central Airport in a flight operation that was staged through the company's Asia Pacific Hub in Subic Bay, the Philippines. Federal Express is a co-sponsor of the relief mission in conjunction with Heart to Heart.

"We are honored to once again be part of a medical relief mission organized by Heart to Heart, a truly worthy organization whose ongoing efforts have improved the lives of so many around the world," Michael L. Ducker, senior vice president for FedEx's Asia Pacific division said at the arrival ceremonies held at the airport.

"This mission received the outstanding support from China's Central and Sichuan governments, and represents an excellent example of how efforts can transcend all geographical, economic and political boundaries. Equally important, this mission could not have been fulfilled without the generous contributions of 10 other world sponsors of the event who have all rallied to support this worthy cause," Mr. Ducker added.

The relief supplies are being delivered to nine recipient organizations, including provincial, municipal, district, county and city hospitals in Chengdu and the surrounding rural areas.

This was the third Heart to Heart mission in which FedEx has provided all the air transportation and logistics support. Previous missions went to Vietnam in 1995 and to India in the following year.

"This is a tangible gesture of friendship to the people of China as the doors of trade open wider with other members of the global community. It is our hope that efforts such as this will further assist the Central government in attaining its five-year goal as part of the country's Poverty Alleviation campaign," Mr. Ducker said.

Shipments included in Heart to Heart missions are purchased by the relief organization through corporate financial donations and through product donations by leading pharmaceutical and medical companies. Other world sponsors for the Chengdu mission include: McDonnell Douglas Corporation, The Chrysler Fund, EAS International, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Eli Lilly & Company, Johnson & Johnson, McNeil Consumer Products Company, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, 3M Littman Stethoscopes, and Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.
