Federal Express Delivers 25 Tons of Medicines and Relief Supplies to ChongQing

Delivery marks FedEx's second sponsorship of US-based Heart to Heart mission

HONG KONG, April 30, 1998 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) on behalf of Heart to Heart International, a US-based medical relief organization, delivered a humanitarian airlift of approximately 25 tons of pharmaceutical and relief supplies to Chongqing Municipality in the People's Republic of China on April 26, 1998. This marks the second time the organizations have cooperated to bring essential medical supplies into China, and the fourth such project in Asia.

The arrangements required cooperation and involvement between government officials, healthcare facilities, businesses and members of the community from both the US and China.

Speaking at the ceremony to mark the delivery of the relief supplies, John Quinn, vice president of Federal Express' China and Mid Pacific Region, said: "The Chongqing government has been incredibly supportive throughout the whole mission. It is our hope that efforts such as this will further assist the central government in attaining its five-year goal as part of the country's poverty alleviation program."

According to the Chinese government, more than 3 million people in the Chongqing area live below the official poverty line, with annual incomes of less than US$64. Working in cooperation with the China Red Cross, Heart to Heart will distribute the medical supplies to hospitals in Chongqing and other areas along the Yangtze River.

This is the fourth Heart to Heart mission for which FedEx has donated all air transportation and logistical support. Previous missions went to Vietnam in 1995 and India in 1996. The 1997 mission saw more than 40 tons of pharmaceutical products valued at over US$6 million delivered to eight area hospitals in Chengdu Ü a project that Heart to Heart says was one its most successful ever.

"Federal Express is honored to once again be part of this medical relief mission organized by Heart to Heart," added Quinn. "We have always been proud of the relationship we have with them."
