Multi-million dollar investment strengthens FedEx's commitment to Singapore
SINGAPORE, June 7, 2001 - Federal Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today unveiled a 135,000 square-foot facility at Changi South comprising a multi-million dollar sorting station and a state-of-the-art logistics warehouse.
"This new facility strengthens FedEx's stake in Singapore and is a significant step forward for us," said Peter Yin, Regional Vice President, FedEx South Pacific.
"With this high-tech sorting facility and warehouse, FedEx will enter a new phase in Singapore, offering even greater, faster and more reliable services to our customers."
Mr Yin was speaking at the official opening ceremony today attended by Guest-of-honour Dr John Chen, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology and Minister of State for National Development.
Located at 6 Changi South Street 2, the state-of-the-art logistics warehouse is among the most advanced, efficient and secure of its kind, serving some of the world's largest and best known multinational corporations.
The new sorting facility is equipped with a high-tech, fully mechanized belt with telescopic conveyors and a bigger station capable of housing up to 75 vans. It will be able to handle up to 3,000 packages and documents per hour.
"FedEx has also made a significant investment in new Mercedes Benz vans for this facility along with an enormous roll-out of IT to support what will eventually become the FedEx Singapore District Headquarters," Mr Yin said.
The Changi South facility will also provide room for FedEx to expand operations in Singapore.
"We have outgrown our premises at Kaki Bukit. The excellent response from our customers in Singapore signaled a need for not just a new facility, but one which will enable us to grow further as we continue to strengthen our businesses here," Mr Yin explained.
FedEx began its Singapore operations in 1984 with eight employees and has grown to more than 900 today. It is the leader in air-express transportation in Singapore because of its superior network of air and ground infrastructure.
"What you see here today at Changi South is an important part of a giant global network of infrastructure, including 668 aircraft and more than 94,000 vehicles. With this infrastructure, FedEx can offer Singapore businesses guaranteed next-business-day delivery to 19 Asian cities and delivery to 211 countries word-wide within 48 hours. This level of capability remains unmatched by our competitors," Mr Yin said.
FedEx Express, a US$15 billion subsidiary of FedEx Corp., connects areas that generate 90% percent of the world's gross domestic product in 24 to 48 hours with door-to-door, customs-cleared service and a money-back guarantee*. The company's unmatched air route authorities and infrastructure make it the world's largest express transportation company, providing fast, reliable and time-definite transportation of more than 3.3 million items to 210 countries each working day.
