FedEx Strengthens Commitment to Malaysia with Opening of Express Gateway in Penang

PENANG, July 31, 2001 - Federal Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today celebrated the unveiling of its new 40,000 square-foot FedEx Express Centre at the MAB New Cargo Complex, Penang International Airport, which will serve as its express gateway operations to Asia and the rest of the world.

The event was officiated by YB Dato' Seri Rafidah Aziz, Minister of International Trade and Industry and attended by more than 250 guests including the Penang Chief Minister, YAB Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Speaking at the ceremony, Peter Yin, Regional Vice President FedEx South Pacific, said the new facility comprises a high-tech gateway and sorting operation that serves some of the world's largest multi-national corporations based in Penang.

"This new Penang facility strengthens FedEx's stake in Malaysia and is a significant step forward for us," Mr Yin said.

"With this high-tech sorting facility, express gateway operation and our own MD11 aircraft flying in and out of Penang every day of the week, FedEx has entered a new phase in Malaysia, offering even greater, faster and more reliable services to our customers."

The state-of-the-art facility boasts leading-edge sorting and distribution technology with the capacity to handle up to 2,000 documents and packages an hour.

Mr Yin said Penang had become the technological hub of Malaysia and as such, FedEx had invested heavily in its infrastructure and people to become the leading express delivery company for the high-tech electronic manufacturing firms based on the island-state.

He said the Government of Malaysia's "open-skies" policy had helped to create a positive business environment for airlines and high-tech manufacturers alike.

"FedEx has the capacity to uplift more than 85-tonnes of manufactured high-tech goods from Penang each and every day of the week, and we are the only self-handling airline in Malaysia, apart from the national carrier," Mr Yin said.

"Our ability to express deliver high-tech products manufactured here in Penang to the rest of the world in a fast, cost efficient way, has become the winning formula for some of the world's great manufacturers such as Dell and Intel.

"What you see here today at the FedEx Express Centre, Penang, is an important part of a giant global network of infrastructure, including 640 aircraft and more than 94,000 vehicles. With this infrastructure, FedEx can offer Penang businesses guaranteed next-business-day delivery to 19 Asian cities, next business day deliveries to North America and delivery to 211 countries world-wide in 24 to 48 hours. This level of capability remains unmatched by our competitors," Mr Yin said.

Apart from Penang, FedEx has another four centers located in Petaling Jaya, Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kuching and serves the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang in addition to the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas. FedEx's 25,000 sq ft cargo handling facility at the KLIA was opened in July 1998.

With annual revenues of $20 billion, FedEx Corp. is the premier global provider of transportation, e-commerce and supply-chain management services. The company offers integrated business solutions through a network of subsidiaries operating independently, including FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company; FedEx Ground, North America's second largest provider of small-package ground delivery service; FedEx Freight, a leading provider of regional less-than-truckload freight services; FedEx Custom Critical, the world's largest provider of expedited, time-critical shipments; and FedEx Trade Networks, a provider of customs brokerage, consulting, information technology and trade facilitation solutions.
