FedEx's New Building in Penang

Reaffirms Commitment to Malaysia

PENANG, August 17, 2000 - Federal Express Corp. (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today announced the opening of the company's new administration centre in the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone in Penang. This new facility is in response to increased demand for time-definite air express services from businesses in mainland Penang.

The new facility occupies 14,500 square feet and features a sorting and distribution center with a FedEx World Service Center (WSC) for walk-in customers. A total of 52 staff are based in the double-storey building with a team of 17 vehicles operating full-time from the premises. The station is designed to handle about 70,000 packages per month, which represents a 200 percent improvement from the volume FedEx previously handled.

"We are very excited about Wisma FedEx. This is the first standalone FedEx building we are occupying in Malaysia and we believe this move will greatly help to enhance our services to our customers. With increased capabilities, we have greater flexibility in providing our customers with more reliable service", said Mr. Peter Yin, Regional Vice President of FedEx South Pacific.

"We anticipate a strong increase in demand for our services to and from Penang. As exports in Malaysia, specifically those related to the electronics and IT industries, continue to grow, we believe the demand for express transportation will increase correspondingly. Penang is the Silicon Valley of Southeast Asia. Multinational high-tech corporations continue to set up and expand manufacturing bases in this state. This facility will help FedEx position itself to meet the anticipated increase in cargo traffic between Penang and the region," said Mr. Yin.

"We believe our business in Malaysia will continue to grow aggressively and this facility will certainly help centralize and further streamline the company's administrative operations in Malaysia over the next five years", added Mr. Ramesh Kumar, Managing Director of FedEx Malaysia. "In addition, local customers will be able to enjoy greater ease of access through the Service Centre, where they will be able to drop-off their shipments".

This development is yet another part of FedEx's long-term expansion plans in Malaysia. Recently, FedEx set up a Penang Customer Care Center to provide more personalised service to customers from Penang. The Center provides a toll-free line for customers to call with queries. Dedicated call representatives are on hand to assist these customers in terms of service inquiries, pick-up arrangements, package tracking and expedition of clearance.
