New FedEx Express Station Opens in Chengdu

Global Express Network Expected to Spur Sichuan's Growth in International Trade

CHENGDU, September 2, 1997 - Chengdu business leaders, Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) representatives and EAS International officials recently celebrated the opening of the new FedEx Chengdu Express Station at a reception and dinner at the Sichuan International Golf Club. At the event, FedEx expressed its commitment to helping Chengdu grow its international trade by linking Chengdu to world markets via the company's extensive global express transportation network.

"Chengdu has been growing very fast, and I predict that FedEx's presence here will encourage the growth of Chengdu's intra-Asia and international trade. FedEx provides the infrastructure that makes it possible for businesses in Chengdu to ship their goods to 212 countries in the world, often in 48 hours or less. This easy access to any market in the world will make Chengdu businesses far more competitive," said Marco Chan, managing director and general manager for FedEx's China operations.

FedEx began service to Chengdu in April 1997. The new FedEx Chengdu Express Station, operated by FedEx licensee EAS International, is located at No. 11-1 Nan Road and offers door-to-door pick-up and delivery seven days per week from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EAS International Transportation Ltd. is FedEx's Global Service Participant in China and provides express pick-up and delivery to over 100 centers throughout China.

FedEx is the only U.S.-based express transportation company with aviation rights to fly to China, and it currently has four flights per week to Beijing and Shanghai. Chengdu is connected to these gateways via domestic airlines.

In a gesture of friendship to the people of China and Sichuan Province, FedEx and 10 U.S. companies supported the Heart-to-Heart FedEx medical airlift to Sichuan in April 1997. During this mission, a FedEx aircraft delivered 40 tons of pharmaceutical and medical supplies valued at approximately US$6 million from the U.S. to Chengdu Airport. The supplies were received by nine recipient organizations in Sichuan and distributed to hospitals and clinics throughout the province. Heart-to-Heart International is a U.S.-based medical relief organization, and the mission was supported by China's Central and Sichuan governments.

FedEx currently serves the Asia Pacific market with approximately 4,300 employees serving more than 30 countries and territories. The company provides the most extensive trans-Pacific air lift of any major competitor. Operating its own wide-bodied MD-11, DC-10 and A310 aircraft, FedEx offers over 250 flights per week to the following locations: Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Osaka, Penang, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Subic Bay, Taipei, and Tokyo, as well as destinations in the U.S.

Federal Express is the world's largest express transportation company providing fast and reliable services for more than 2.8 million items in 212 countries each working day. The company employs approximately 137,000 people, has more than 42,500 drop-off locations, and operates more than 590 aircraft and 38,500 vehicles in its integrated global network. FedEx maintains electronic connections with more than 750,000 users via FedEx PowerShip®, FedEx Ship® and FedEx interNetShipSM. Federal Express reported revenues of US$11.5 billion for its fiscal year ended May 31, 1997.
