Masterclass organized for Hong Kong music students
HONG KONG, February 3, 1999 - As part of Federal Express Corporation's (FedEx) commitment to the arts in Hong Kong, the world's largest air express transportation company jointly organized with The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) the first-ever US National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) masterclass. Leonard Slatkin, Music Director of the NSO, and three of his principal musicians met with Professor Anthony Camden, Dean of Music at the HKAPA, and selected music students from the Academy to share ideas and critiques.
"FedEx recognizes the importance of music as a cultural contribution to our global as well as local communities. We are delighted to sponsor community events like the masterclass in which the arts and culture are celebrated and reinforced. We are extremely pleased to have Mr. Slatkin and the NSO musicians conduct this session in Hong Kong," said Wilson Chung, Managing Director, FedEx, Hong Kong and Macau.
Mr. Chung and Prof. Camden presented Mr. Slatkin and the NSO a plaque commemorating the NSO's first-ever masterclass in Hong Kong at a ceremony at the HKAPA.
"We are extremely excited to have Mr. Slatkin and his musicians share their expertise with some of Hong Kong's most promising music students. Masterclass sessions are valuable opportunities for our students to learn from internationally-acclaimed musicians," remarked Prof. Camden during the masterclass. "Sharing different cultural perspectives through music offers a more enriched educational experience."
After the plaque presentation, selected students were grouped with the NSO masters, Ricardo Cyncynates, assistant concertmaster and violinist, Lewis Lipnick, principal contrabassoon, and Ted Thayer, principal French horn. Pieces from Brahms, Shostakovich and other classics were performed.
FedEx is one of the corporate sponsors for NSO's Asian Tour 1999, a tour that covers eight cities from January 24 to February 10, 1999. The NSO played at the Hong Kong Cultural Center on the evening of February 1, 1999, to an audience of about 2,000.
