FedEx Celebrates a Decade in Australia

Phenomenal growth over the last years and implementation of new strategies ahead

Sydney, June 7, 1999 - Federal Express Corp (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, is celebrating its tenth year of business in Australia this year.

Reflecting on its rapid expansion and the growth of the air express industry, Bruce Myers, Managing Director, Australasia, said, "This is an exciting time for FedEx. We look forward to implementing new technologies and services to provide greater convenience and more reliable shipping solutions to our local customers. In addition, Australia is going to be a key e-commerce market for FedEx and we will be focusing on establishing promising strategic alliances with e-commerce partners across the country", continued Mr. Myers.

The two most significant developments in the past year include connecting Sydney to the AsiaOne network, and launching a Digitally Assisted Dispatch Systems (DADs) technology.

To be fully operational mid June, the new DADs system is a nationwide dispatch network that provides timely response to customers' requests for package pick-up and delivery by enabling delivery service agents to upload information on every package into the company's centralised mainframe system.

The data stored in FedEx's computerised information database is updated regularly as the shipment is scanned at least ten times until the package is delivered. This innovation has been designed to assist customers run their delivery schedules with optimum efficiency. Another recent milestone for FedEx in Australia was the introduction of its AsiaOne service to Australia in September last year in response to increased demand for inbound and outbound express transportation.

The launch of the service from Australia has allowed FedEx customers greater speed and reliability through improved delivery services into Asia, and Asia-wide. Shipment of packages of virtually any weight is now possible along with later cut-off times for package pickups.

Over the past ten years, other key milestones include the launches of:
internet home page in 1994
nationwide toll-free number 13 26 10 in 1996
FedEx 25kg and 10kg Boxes in 1997
FedEx interNetShipä in 1997
FedEx Ship 3.1 in 1998.

Since FedEx's establishment in 1989 at its first premise in Botany Road, the number of employees has increased significantly from an initial 20 people. FedEx is now housed in a larger, consolidated headquarters in Alexandria and boasts a workforce of 360 employees, a fleet of vehicles totalling 75 in addition to five weekly flights of MD-11 wide-bodied aircraft.

The company's coverage within Australia grew quickly, with the opening of a facility in Canberra in late 1989, and facilities in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in June 1990. In June 1998, FedEx opened its Sydney West facility in Rydalmere to cater for the increased demand from its customer base in Sydney's Greater Western Region.
