Press Releases
SINGAPORE, July 20th 1999 -- ST Mobile Data (STMD) and Federal
Express Corporation (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation
company, today announced the expansion of FedEx's communication
network coverage for their Digital Assisted Dispatch System (DADS),
using Mobitex. With this new expansion, Mobitex helps facilitate
FedEx's island-wide, real-time communication between its couriers
and it's central dispatch center.
Federal Express's DADS is a two-way data communication system used
by the couriers and central dispatch center to communicate daily
on the pick-up and delivery job orders. Everyday, the dispatch center
assigns job orders to the couriers wirelessly through DADS. Couriers
will then receive the necessary information from their in-vehicle
data terminal . Once a pick-up or delivery is completed at the customer's
place, the couriers will send an acknowledgment together with the
scanned parcel's barcode to the central dispatch to inform the center
that the job is completed.
Previously, these updates were not done in real-time. The prior
DADS system used a private frequency, which provided limited communication
network coverage. Couriers had to travel within a certain coverage
area in order to communicate with the dispatch center. STMD's Mobitex
public data network has enhanced FedEx's reliability by supplementing
the previous private network coverage and enabling DADS island-wide.
Couriers can now travel *anywhere island-wide and send updates to
the central dispatch center in real-time.
"FedEx is committed to enhancing our services to customers. By
expanding our network coverage, our dispatch center is able to track
all shipments in real-time.Our customer service personnel are also
able to provide customers with real-time shipment information. The
system has also increased operational efficiency by minimizing delays
in data transmission. We have implemented similar Mobitex systems
successfully in Australia and the United Kingdom," said Rhicke Jennings,
Managing Director of FedEx's Singapore operations.
"As a public network service provider, ST Mobile Data aims to provide
valuable network services and expertise to our customers. With Mobitex,
we can help organizations to streamline their operational resources,
increase in productivity and efficiency and improve their customer
service. We are pleased that Federal Express has chosen Mobitex
as the choice of data communication network," said Mr Tay Kiong
Hong, General Manager/Vice President of ST Mobile Data.
* ST Mobile Data provides a street coverage of more than 99%.
