SYDNEY, August 18, 2000 - The US Olympic Committee reportedly
paid over half a million dollars to give their Olympic Cross
Country Equestrian team a head start in the fast-approaching
Olympic Games.
The horses arrived at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport earlier
this month after a 22-hour flight aboard a Federal Express
(FedEx) aircraft.
According to Mr. Don Hardy, Managing Director, FedEx Australasia,
the entire operation went off without a hitch.
"The horses were transported on a dedicated, wide-bodied
MD-11 FedEx plane," said Mr Hardy. "These planes allow large,
heavyweight consignments to be shipped easily, without the
risk of costly delays, so the transportation of live animals
is handled as efficiently as any other cargo."
The horses were taken directly to Eastern Creek Quarantine
where they will spend two weeks before heading to a training
camp at media mogul Kerry Packer's stud property at Scone
in the NSW Hunter Valley.
As the Games draw decidedly nearer, FedEx, the world's largest
express transportation company will transport shipments too
heavy and awkward for other carriers, including more Olympic
horses and television and other broadcast equipment.
