Federal Express sponsors airlift of medical supplies to Jakarta

Approximately 30 tons of pharmaceuticals to be delivered in first medical airlift from the U.S.

HONG KONG, AUGUST 21, 1998 -- Federal Express Corp. (FedEx) and Uplift International, a US-based medical relief organization, today announced a humanitarian airlift to Indonesia. Approximately 30 tons of pharmaceuticals and relief supplies will be delivered to recipient hospitals in several areas of Indonesia in the last week of August. This marks the first time the organizations have cooperated to bring essential medical supplies into Indonesia, and the third such project in Asia.

"We are proud to be able to work with Uplift International to help carry out this valuable mission," said Michael L Ducker, President for FedEx's Asia Pacific Division. "The unfortunate events in Indonesia have left many Indonesians in a vulnerable position and we feel honored to have the opportunity to support the humanitarian efforts of Uplift International, an organization whose work has made a significant impact on many people in Southeast Asia."

"It is our hope that these efforts will benefit the Indonesians during this difficult period. This mission will see FedEx airlifting pharmaceutical products valued at nearly US$1.73 million, from the US and UK to four hospitals in Indonesia."

This mission is one of the many community projects FedEx has undertaken in Asia and the third Uplift International mission for which FedEx has donated air transportation and logistical support. On the previous two occasions, FedEx transported pharmaceuticals and medical equipment to hospitals in Vietnam.

A month ago, FedEx worked with the Red Cross Society to deliver 121,000 pounds of food and medical supplies to Jakarta where it was distributed to 10,000 families in the outlying regions of Indonesia.

The arrangements for the upcoming mission to Indonesia require cooperation and involvement between government officials, healthcare facilities, businesses and members of the community from both the US and Indonesia.
