Federal Express Forms Joint Venture in China

BEIJING, November 11, 1999 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, and Tianjin-based Da Tian W. Air Service Corporation, today announced the formation of a new joint venture in Beijing. Federal Express-DTW Co. Ltd. is a joint venture dedicated to providing unparalleled international express transportation services for customers with shipping requirements to and from China.

David Cunningham, FedEx Asia Pacific President, and Wang Shusheng, Da Tian president, officiated at the launch ceremony held at the China World Hotel. Eddy Chan, FedEx Regional Vice President for China and Mid Pacific, and Wilson Ma, Da Tian Vice President, were also present.

"Federal Express-DTW Co. Ltd. brings together two powerhouses in the express transportation industry," said David Cunningham. "With a strong network and a proven track record in the Chinese marketplace, Da Tian is an ideal partner for FedEx and together we hope to further develop the international express business in China. We are confident that Federal Express-DTW Co. Ltd. will prove to be a successful partnership for years to come."

Mr. Cunningham also expressed his appreciation for the continued support of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), the General Administration of Customs, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and other authorities in helping to make the joint venture possible.

Beijing-based Federal Express-DTW Co. Ltd. commenced operations on November 1, 1999 and provides world-class, fast, time-definite and reliable express delivery service. With the continued assistance and support of MOFTEC, SAIC, Customs, CAAC, the new joint venture company plans to establish branch offices in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen by the end of the year 2000 and open offices in an additional 100 cities across the country by 2005.

Over the past month, FedEx has further bolstered its services in China. In mid- October, the company launched an industry-first simplified Chinese web page in China, allowing shippers and viewers to surf the site and track the status of shipments in their own language (www.fedex.com). On November 2, FedEx initiated a five-time weekly Shenzhen flight, connecting southern China to FedEx's international network of 209 countries. FedEx also opened an express handling facility at the Huangtian International Airport in Shenzhen, the first of its kind in China. Concurrently, FedEx increased its flight schedule to Beijing and Shanghai from four to five times weekly.

Founded in 1992, Da Tian W. Air Service Corporation is based in Tianjin, with branches in 16 cities in China. Specializing in forwarding, charter operation and dangerous goods handling, the company was ranked one of China's top five forwarding companies in 1997.
