Federal Express Opens New Express Facility at Chek Lap Kok Airport

Advanced cargo handling capabilities streamline operations and improve efficiency

Hong Kong, June 29, 1998 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) today becomes the first air express transportation company to open its new cargo handling facilities in the new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok.

Officiating at the opening ceremony today, FedEx's President for Asia Pacific Division Michael Ducker said, "The opening of our operations here at Chek Lap Kok represents an important milestone for FedEx. We are committed to the Hong Kong market and firmly believe that our customers will find our services significantly enhanced through the company's use of the advanced facilities."

FedEx's facilities are located in the Asia Air Freight Terminal (AAT), an international consortium which holds a franchise agreement with the Airport Authority to operate an air cargo terminal at the airport. Occupying a 2,500-square meter warehouse space at AAT, FedEx's facility houses a dedicated sorting operation and a dual conveyor belt system with the capacity to handle 9,000 documents and 6,000 non-documents per hour.

The company has also leased a 750-square meter office space for employees from its gateway operations department. Approximately 100 employees will be working at the airport facility.

FedEx will be the first express transportation company to establish electronic data interchange with Hong Kong Customs at Chek Lap Kok when the airport begins operations on July 6. This capability coupled with the comprehensive cargo handling abilities, allows FedEx to sort, customs clear and distribute shipments under one roof, thus improving efficiency and giving the company greater flexibility in providing better service to customers.

Earlier this month, FedEx was the first foreign flag and first cargo carrier making an inaugural flight into the new airport. The company also used the occasion to do a simulation of its new facilities. The event was supported by Ogden Aviation (Hong Kong) Limited, the ground handling agent for FedEx at the new airport.

"With the cooperation of Ogden, we are confident that our services will meet the demands of our customers," added Ducker.

FedEx currently serves more than 30 countries and territories in the Asia Pacific market with approximately 5,000 employees. The company provides the most extensive trans-Pacific airlift of any major competitor. Operating its own wide-bodied MD-11, DC-10 and A310 aircraft, FedEx offers over 260 flights per week to the following locations: Bangkok, Beijing, Cebu, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Osaka, Penang, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Subic Bay, Taipei, and Tokyo, as well as destinations in the U.S.
