Press Releases
Part of efforts to contribute to development of Singapore as premier info-communications hub
SINGAPORE, November 10, 1999 -- Federal Express Corp. (FedEx),
the world's largest transportation company, today intensified its
push into Asia with the official opening of its first Asia Pacific
Data Centre.
The Data Centre was launched at FedEx's Techlink office by the
Chairman of Singapore's Economic Development Board, Mr. Philip Yeo,
at a special ceremony officiated by Mr David Cunningham, FedEx's
president for Asia Pacific.
One of several giant data centres that have been established by
FedEx around the world, the Singapore Data Centre will be the hub
for the company's IT services and operations across Asia.
"The extremely powerful and highly advanced client-server system
that FedEx has established through its Asia Pacific Data Centre
in Singapore will provide the vital processing power that is needed
to serve the entire region, " said Mr. Cunningham. "This Data Center
allows us to think globally and act locally, focusing on regional
needs and capitalizing on corporate resources. In essence, this
network speeds delivery of our core applications to international
regions, and allows us to scale applications to meet customer demands
and needs".
"We are dedicated to developing this market and providing outstanding
value to our customers by delivering world-class express transportation
based on advanced technology and unsurpassed customer service",
continued Mr. Cunningham.
Mr Philip Yeo, said, "The FedEx Data Centre is a strong testimony
to the I.T. capabilities that Singapore has put in place. FedEx's
regional express and logistics activities will also be strengthened
as its e-commerce development team based in Singapore will continue
to develop new IT solutions. To attract even more of such e-commerce
activities into Singapore, EDB is working with the Nanyang Polytechnic
to offer a new E-Commerce Specialist Manpower Programme".
The Asia Pacific Data Centre reinforces FedEx's commitment to Singapore
and is in line with the Republic's goal to be a premier info-communications
and transport hub. In all, six Data Centres will be added to the
current FedEx technological network. This will allow faster access
and quicker response time, which will serve as a competitive advantage
for FedEx in addressing customers' needs, both internally and externally.
Included in the strategic applications software supported by the
120 staff at the 36,000 square feet Data and IT Centre are internal
applications such as customs clearance, customer service and invoicing,
as well as customer software products, advanced automation, e-commerce
and internet applications.
