FedEx pays tribute to Hong Kong's Customs and Excise Department for major technology achievement

Department's new Air Cargo Clearance System hailed by industry as significant solution to cargo operations

HONG KONG, December 14, 1998 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), the world's largest air express transportation company, paid tribute to the Customs and Excise Department of Hong Kong for its outstanding contribution to the air transport industry. The Department's Air Cargo Clearance System (ACCS), the latest development in transport technology, has helped streamline shipment processing operations and minimize the processing time by at least two hours.

In support of the air transportation industry, Mr. John E. Quinn, Vice President of FedEx, Mid-Pacific region presented an achievement plaque to Mr. Raymond Li, Acting Commissioner, Customs and Excise Department of Hong Kong at a ceremony last Friday.

"FedEx is recognizing the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department for its successful implementation of the Air Cargo Clearance System. The ACCS expedites customs clearance and supports the continuing development of the air transportation industry," said Mr. Quinn at the plaque presentation ceremony.

A pioneer in the Just-in-Time delivery business, FedEx sees the ACCS instrumental in maximizing value for the customer in the air transportation industry. Before the development of ACCS, inbound shipments could only be processed and cleared by customs manually upon arrival. With ACCS, data can be processed before the shipment arrives at the airport, thus reducing processing time significantly by at least two hours and facilitating faster and more efficient customs clearance for Hong Kong.

"We are proud to receive this honor from the air transportation industry," said Mr. Li. "The industry's support encourages us to further our efforts to make Hong Kong a more advanced and competitive hub."
