Pandas To Arrive Aboard "The FedEx® PandaExpress" |

Over the past five months, FedEx representatives in the U.S. and China have worked with both U.S. and Chinese government officials, as well as zoo representatives, to ensure all necessary precautions have been taken to provide a comfortable flight for the pandas.
Two custom-built transport containers will house the pandas during their 15-hour flight. Le Le, the four-year-old male panda, and Ya Ya, the two-year-old female panda, will be the only cargo aboard a custom-painted FedEx MD-11 jet, to be renamed "The FedEx® PandaExpress", during the trans-Pacific journey.
Veterinarians from the Memphis Zoo, Shanghai Zoo, and Beijing Zoo have been granted special flight privileges so they can accompany the pandas during the air transport.
Departing Beijing, The FedEx® PandaExpress will fly eastward, cross the International Date Line, and arrive in Anchorage, Alaska. In Anchorage, The FedEx® PandaExpress will refuel and change crews, as the special shipment is expedited through Customs. While flight times often vary due to weather and wind conditions, The FedEx® PandaExpress is scheduled to touch down at Memphis International Airport on Monday, April 7, 2003. Due to regulations, all panda shipment departures and arrivals at the three airports will be closed to the general public.
