US Customs Update - Advanced Cargo Information

Effective August 13, 2004, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) will be implementing a new regulation called 'Advanced Cargo Information' (ACI).

ACI will apply to all shipments going to or through North America. It is being implemented by CBP to assure that the U.S. transportation networks and borders are secure.

What shipments are subject to ACI regulations?
- Non-document shipments of any size
- Documents weighing more than 453 grams or 16 ounces

Which FedEx customers are impacted?
All customers shipping to US, Canada and Latin America are impacted.

To avoid unnecessary delay to your shipments, it is important to make sure all paperwork is accurate and detailed.

When completing an Air Waybill and Commercial Invoice for your North America bound shipment, remember to include the following information:
  • What is in the package.
  • What the contents are made of.
  • What the contents will be used for.
  • How many are in the package (net quantity).
  • How much the package is worth, and in what currency.
  • The six-digit harmonized tariff number for the commodity.
  • The state (or territory) and country of origin, meaning where the contents were manufactured.
  • The complete address for both shipper and recipient (PO Boxes are not accepted).

FedEx will continue to monitor the status of the new provisions and take the necessary steps to keep you informed. We encourage you to regularly visit www.fedex.com for future updates.
