Certificates of Origin - when do you need them?

Whenever you are sending an international shipment to any country, the same question will likely arise: Does your shipment need a Certificate of Origin?

The answer depends on a number of factors, such as:

  • Where you are shipping to: Many countries, such as Israel, Japan, South Africa, Australia, Chile, Singapore and Nigeria, require a Certificate of Origin.

  • What the product is: Many countries require a Certificate of Origin for shipments of textiles, such as fabric and clothing that exceed a certain value.

  • Where the product was manufactured: Specific reasons for countries requesting Certificates of Origin vary, but in some cases the reason for the request is to see if the shipment qualifies for preferential treatment under a free trade agreement.

  • What the product's value is: In some cases, countries require a Certificate of Origin only for goods that exceed a certain value.
