FedEx sponsors shipping of posters by Malaysian artist to Germany
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26, 2004 - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, recently helped support the development of the local arts scene by sponsoring the shipment of artwork by local young Malaysian artist Philbert Tiki Yong. Philbert's poster designs are being submitted in the International Poster Competition: UTOPIA STATION II in Munich, Germany, organized by the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF).
Twelve-year old Philbert is no stranger to international art exhibitions, representing Malaysia in the International Child Art Olympiad Festival 2003 in Washington, DC in September 2003. For this competition, three of Philbert's posters will be featured, alongside works by other young artists from across the globe. The winning designs will be exhibited in Germany with the works of other artists.
Ms. Lily Tay, Managing Director for FedEx Malaysia, present when the artist delivered his pieces to FedEx's Malaysian headquarters for shipment to Munich said "I'm always impressed to see young people with talent and ambition such as Philbert's. FedEx is proud to support his efforts to represent Malaysia among the world's renowned artists, and we are certainly pleased to have helped him in realizing his dream to have his work appearing in such a prestigious competition."
"FedEx has a strong tradition in Malaysia of providing support and assistance that reflects the company's philanthropic philosophy, directed at four strategic areas of need: artistic and cultural, educational, the environment and civic and humanitarian well being." Said Ms Tay
Philbert's work, reflecting his concern for the environment said "My main message is that we all need to take care of the environment, is spite of globalization and modernization. I hope that as a result of competitions like the ICAF Han Global Art Competition in Germany, more people see the value of art as a way of showing the world as it really is and what it could be. I'm very happy my art will be in Germany with all of the other great, contemporary artists."
FedEx also helped FedEx and his family track his parcel online. Mrs Audrey Yong Yeo said that the support from FedEx not only guaranteed the safe arrival of the posters, but also offered a valuable learning experience for both her children, as they tracked the journey on its way from Malaysia to Germany.
A selection of the work created by the children will be exhibited alongside the utopias of contemporary and renowned artists at the Haus der Kunst (in Munich, Germany) from October 1, 2004 until January 9, 2005. Yoko Ono is expected, among others, at the private viewing. ICAF will invite the nominated children to take part at the opening of the exhibition in Munich, Germany.
