New ordinance in force to protect endangered species
The Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, Cap. 586, came into effect on December 1, 2006. An advance license from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is required for any import, export or re-export of endangered species.
The new ordinance includes additional endangered species that were listed in the latest meeting of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). These include hump head wrasse, certain freshwater turtles and agarwood. This also applies to all medicines containing endangered species.
However, certain controls have been simplified; for example, a license is no longer required for the import or possession of certain specimens of species under Appendix II of the ordinance.
