Poultry Imports into the US

With effect from 21 Nov 2005, birds/bird products from the following countries are prohibited and/or restricted for import into the U.S.:

  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Laos
  • South Korea
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • China (does not include Hong Kong)
  • Malaysia

Current U.S. import regulations prohibit and/or restrict the importation of birds, poultry and unprocessed birds and poultry products from regions that have reported the presence of H5N1 Avian Influenza. The regulations include:

  • Unprocessed bird and poultry carcasses, parts, and products from affected regions may be imported only if they are research or educational material destined for a museum or an educational or research institution and must be accompanied by an import permit from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
  • Products and byproducts of birds and poultry, including feathers, birds' nests, and bird trophies may be imported from affected regions only when accompanied by an import permit from USDA. To apply online for an import permit from USDA, please go to http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ncie/
  • Birds/poultry (live) of US origin returning to the US from affected regions must be accompanied by an import permit from USDA and are subject to a 30-day quarantine at a USDA facility.
