FedEx Sponsors 'Children of the City' Arts Education Project with Penang Heritage Trust

PENANG, 3 January 2003 - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, has supported a unique arts education project called Anak-anak Kota or "Children of the City", organised by the Penang Heritage Trust to teach children about their diverse heritage.

Employees from FedEx's office in Penang volunteered as facilitators for a series of research workshops aimed at empowering young children to explore their cultural and historical identities.

In addition, FedEx also sponsored the printing of postcards featuring pictures of pre-war buildings and scenery of inner-city Georgetown taken by the children during their art workshops, and brochures for tourists created by the children in their quest to learn about "Endangered Trades and Endangered Foods".

FedEx employee Liza Lee, who participated as a facilitator, said the workshops helped the children to understand how their identity is rooted in a diverse 'living and changing' heritage.

"The awareness was brought about through creative arts that deal with topics defined as inherited architecture, ecology, human settlement, trades, craftsmanship, language, customs, food and so on."

"During our walk-abouts in Georgetown, the children visited and spoke to several traders involved with endangered trades such as the making of traditional signages, bead slippers, joss sticks and even grounded coffee powder. They also met up with those making foods such as popiah skin, yew char kuih and rempah giling and ais tingkap," said Liza.

"The workshops were an eye-opener for the children who are now eagerly working on the brochures to be entitled Heritage Trails of Endangered Trades and Traditional Foods which will contain a description, history, process and a map of the particular trade or food. The brochures are expected to be ready by March 2003," said Liza.

Mr Ramesh Kumar Singam, FedEx Managing Director for Malaysia and Brunei, said FedEx has traditionally been a strong supporter of worthy charitable causes and community activities in Malaysia.

"As a leading company, FedEx's operations extend beyond the delivery of services for profit and also includes the provision of support to the local community," added Mr Singam.
