Detailed and accurate information regarding the goods you are shipping can reduce or avoid any delays in customs.

 

Try to avoid giving vague descriptions of your shipment on the International Air Waybill and Commercial Invoice. Instead, describe your shipment in as much detail as possible. The description of goods should answer the following questions:

 

  • What is it? (A detailed description of the item)
  • What is it made of? (The type of material)
  • What is it going to be used for, or with? (Purpose of use)
  • What is it a part of?

 

Other elements that are fundamental in correctly clearing shipments through customs and guaranteeing that the correct amount of duty/tax is accessed are:

 

  • The detailed shipper and consignee names, addresses and phone numbers
  • The purpose of the shipment (gift, personal use, return for repair, commercial sale, etc.)
  • How many items are being shipped (The quantity and weight of each item, and the total)
  • The unit value of each item and the total value
  • Country in which it was made (Country of manufacture)

 

An example of a good description would be “1 still image digital camera”. The additional data elements mentioned above should also be completed on the International Air Waybill and Commercial Invoice in the appropriate fields.
