Worldwide Customs and Regulatory Updates
Manufacturer Identification Number for Textile and Apparel Commodities into the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a final rule regarding reporting of the Manufacturer Identification code (MID) for textile and apparel articles classified in chapters 50 through 63 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedules (HTS).
The final rule, effective March 27, 2011, includes some changes from the interim rule which has been in effect since 2005. The MID reporting requirement is now applicable to both formal and informal entries of commercial and non-commercial shipments to the U.S.
Shippers are required to provide the name and address of the actual manufacturer of the relevant products in the product description section of the commercial invoice so that importers can construct the MID.
For non-commercial shipments, such as items for personal use, the name and address of the manufacturer, seller or exporter is sufficient.
