A Guide to Importing to China

To assist clearance times and reduce delays, listed below are basic guidelines to assist customers when shipping to China.

  1. Commercial Invoice: A Commercial Invoice is required for all shipments valued at or above 48USD. A specific format is not required, although the following basic information must be included:
    • The shipper's and consignee's name and address
    • The place and date of shipment
    • A detailed description of the goods
    • The FOB value of each item
    • The country of origin
    • The quantity and weight
    • Currency used
    • Freight and Insurance Charges as applicable
    • HS Code of the goods
  2. For personal effects, shipper must indicate explicitly on the air waybill and commercial invoice the wording "personal effects" AFTER the specific commodity description. The sheer declaration of "personal effects" on CI and AWB is not acceptable. Personal effects shipments must be for personal use and of reasonable quantity And should not shipped together with commodities for corporate use.
  3. For document, sample and gift shipments, the word "Document", "sample", or "gift" must indicate explicitly on the air waybill and commercial invoice AND a detailed description of the shipment must be specified.
  4. A dollar value is required for all shipments. No Commercial Value (NCV) is not acceptable. A nominal value must be shown on the CI and AWB.
  5. For medication or dietary supplements, a complete list of ingredients is required.
  6. Air Waybill: The following information must be included: name, telephone number and address of the shipper and the consignee, HS code, postal code, description of goods, CIF value, weight, number of packages and the date. All information must be written in English and consistent with that of the shipment's other documentation.
  7. All shipments valued over 48USD and originating European Union, Japan, U.S., and South Korea are subject to the following packaging and documentation requirements:
    • For coniferous wood packaging including FedEx skids, an original official Certificate of Heat Treatment is required.
    • For non-coniferous wood packaging including FedEx skids, an original Declaration of Non Coniferous Wood Packing Material is required.
    • For non-wood packaging, an original Declaration of Non Wood Packing Material is required.
  8. The following commodities must obtain a China Compulsory Certification Certificate before it can be marketed, imported or used for any commercial purposes in China:
    Electrical wires and cables, Electrical apparatus for switching or protecting electrical circuits, Low-voltage Electrical Apparatus, Small power motors, Electric tools, Welding machines, Household and similar electrical appliances, Audio and video apparatus, Information technology equipment, Lighting apparatus, Telecommunication Terminal equipment, Motor vehicles and Safety Parts, Motor vehicle tires, Safety Glass, Agricultural Machinery, Latex products, Medical Devices, Fire Fighting Equipment, Security Alarm Systems, WLAN products, decoration and ornament products.
  9. Many commodities are subject to import permits or licenses, like medication, mechanical and electronic products, chemicals, food and cosmetics, etc., so shippers must confirm that consignees obtained the import permits or licenses before shipping the commodities to China.
