Detailed shipping information now needed in advance for Canada

From 12 December 2005, Canadian customs authorities will require advance information on high-value (above CAN $1,600) shipments imported into Canada by air.  This needs to be sent four hours prior to the flight arrival.

Governments around the world are implementing more stringent requirements for international shipment documentation, to leverage trade information and to collaborate over security. Specifically, they are requiring clearer and more accurate descriptions of commodities and for advance submission of all shipping information.

So you need to provide thorough and accurate documentation before the pick-up or drop-off of your shipment. Vague or inaccurate commodity descriptions are the main reason for clearance delays. A good description should answer the following:

How many?
What is it?
What is it made of?
What is its intended use?

For example, “30 pages of legal documents” is a much better description than simply listing “documents”.   As much detail as possible on the type, function, and number of items should be included.

The United States is expected to introduce similar new regulations shortly. Of course, FedEx will continue to keep you informed of any further changes as and when we learn about them and adapt our systems quickly and smoothly so that they do not affect our service to you.

For more information on Canadian customs regulations, please view the Canada Border Services Agency‘s web site at www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

Customs authorities require all carriers to comply with the same regulations. Some carriers may or may not be as proactive as FedEx in implementing the necessary changes to their systems and processes, but the new regulations will apply to everyone at the same time.
