2002 Press Releases
Provides greater connectivity from Singapore to Asia and Europe
SINGAPORE, October 17,2002 - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company has strengthened services in Singapore with new inbound flights to Singapore Changi Airport from Japan and outbound flights to Penang, Malaysia.
The 10 additional weekly services strengthen FedEx's flight schedule through Singapore Changi Airport to 36 dedicated all-cargo flights per week and increase capacity by more than 1.2 million lbs. The services, which are now operating, enable faster and more reliable service to key Asian and world economies through a reconfiguration of the existing flight network and infrastructure.
FedEx operates its MD-11 aircraft on the Japan-Singapore route, with daily flights, from Tuesday through Saturday, from Narita, Japan, and then onward to the FedEx Asia Pacific Hub, Subic Bay, Philippines. The FedEx MD-11 aircraft has a high capacity of 180,000lbs. A further five weekly outbound services, using the FedEx A310 aircraft, are scheduled from Singapore to Penang.
This latest increase follows a recent upgrade of FedEx services from Asia to Europe, with capacity doubled on flight routes between the FedEx Asia Pacific Hub and its European Hub at Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris.
According to the Boeing World Air Cargo Forecast 2002/2003, intra-Asia annual growth rate will average 8.4% and Europe-Asia 7%. The enhancements therefore recognise Singapore's importance as a major Asian distribution point for both import and export goods.
FedEx also operates a Logistics Distribution Centre at Changi South, which enables local and off-shore manufacturers to house inventory and product samples in Singapore, ready for express distribution to customers world wide, or to manufacturing and assembly plants in places like Malaysia's high tech zone, Penang.
"The addition of these new flight routes creates a closer trade link between one of the engines of global trade, Japan, and Singapore," said Mr Peter Yin, Vice President FedEx, South Pacific Region.
"With the increasing demand for time definite deliveries, FedEx is continuing our efforts to provide our customers with the fastest and most reliable services to help local companies internationalise." Mr Yin added.
