2004 Press Releases
MALAYSIA, December 28, 2004 - - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, donated a full collection of school textbooks to students at the Shelter Home for Children in Kuala Lumpur (KL) today as part of the "FedEx Delivers Knowledge" program. The donation will make it possible for the children to progress their studies and receive education that they may not have been able to afford.
Attending the donation were Mr. James Nayagam, Chairman of the Shelter Home for Children, Ms. Lily Tay, Managing Director for FedEx Malaysia and Brunei, and students from the Shelter Home.
"FedEx was aware of the work that the Shelter Home for Children was doing in the community to protect children by providing both housing and support. We wanted to assist the organisation especially in the area of education and provide opportunities for these children who may not be able to join mainstream schools," said Ms Tay.
"FedEx believes strongly in everyone's right to pursue their studies to the highest level available, and this is an important part of our own employee development and training programs. With these text books, the students at Shelter Home will now have the chance to potentially move onto higher education," Ms Tay continued.
Mr. James Nayagam, Director of Shelter Home, was also present to accept the donation from FedEx. "We depend on public and corporate donations in order to keep our shelters up and running. Very often, these operating costs can reach RM100,000 per month," said Nayagam. "When a company like FedEx gets involved on the ground level, it makes a very real difference, not only to the Shelter Home at large, but to each of these children. It is a truly gracious gesture, and we appreciate it tremendously."
FedEx delivered the books to Shelter 1 in Petaling Jaya for students in 6 of the organization's shelters. The delivery included textbooks, activity books, dictionaries and teaching materials.
FedEx has a strong tradition of supporting communities in Malaysia and across its global operations, providing support and assistance that reflects the company's philanthropic philosophy, directed at four strategic areas of need: education, artistic and cultural, the environment and humanitarian well being.
