Printable Version Toy imports without required safety certificates risk refusal of entry into Japan

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has recently published revised articles to the Food Sanitation Law relating to the safety of toys. The amendments increase the number of types of toys that may be considered potentially hazardous to children less than six years old.

All import shipments affected by this change (including toys made of cloth) now require a “food sanitation certificate” issued by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This must be submitted at the time of entry together with all other necessary import declaration forms.

Imports of goods covered by the new regulations that are not accompanied by correct paperwork including the new certificate may be refused entry into Japan.

If you intend to consign toys to Japan you are advised to ensure that they fully comply with the new requirements. You can do this by making contact with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare who will be able to advise you whether your shipments are affected by this change or not.
