Shipping Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are commonly used in devices like mobile phones, laptops, PDAs, watches, cameras and children’s toys. All lithium batteries are regulated as dangerous goods since charged battery shipments may overheat and ignite under certain conditions.

FedEx aims to assist with safe transportation of your lithium battery shipments and shipments containing lithium batteries by supplying appropriate packaging. All lithium battery shipments that fall under Part 1 of the relevant IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations can be shipped using FedEx packaging.

Examples of common equipment and devices that fall under IATA Part 1 include, but are not limited to:

• Laptops;
• Mobile phones and PDAs;
• GPS tracking devices;
• MP3 players and iPods;
• Watches and clocks;
• Cameras;
• Toys;
• Power screwdrivers; and,
• Small, wireless appliances.

Any FedEx branded boxes or tubes can be used for these shipments, but the FedEx Pak or FedEx Padded Pak is not permitted as strong outer packaging is required.  Packages containing lithium batteries may be dropped off as normal in FedEx drop boxes and FedEx World Services Centers.

Shipments that contain lithium batteries are required to bear certain labeling. Please see our information guide to review our tips on how to pack batteries shipments.
