HONG KONG, June 5, 2003, --FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, today announced that it will airlift a batch of relief supplies collected by Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) to Mainland China, as an effort to help the Chinese Government combat the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), by utilizing its unparalleled express distribution network between Hong Kong and the Mainland. The relief supplies include 400,000 surgical masks and related protective gear, and will be delivered to Inner Mongolia, Shanxi Province and Guangdong Province. FedEx has been paying close attention to the SARS outbreak in Asia. Together with the community, FedEx is playing its part in assisting the fight against SARS.

"Our live to deliver spirit goes beyond what we do everyday for our customers by using our extensive global and AsiaOne network to deliver much needed relief items such as this shipment for the Red Cross. Throughout the SARS crisis, FedEx employees have been working to support their communities by donating their time and effort to ship much needed items to combat the virus throughout Asia," said Mr. Eddy Chan, Regional Vice President of FedEx's China and Mid Pacific Region. "Our employees in Mainland China and Hong Kong are working closely together to ensure the safe and timely delivery of the materials."

"We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to FedEx for its long-term support in assisting us to deliver relief materials throughout the world and particularly Asia. Through this initiative, we hope to help our compatriots in the Mainland to conquer the SARS epidemic sooner," said HKRC.

HKRC is distributing the donations from the Hong Kong community to the SARS sufferers in the Mainland through the Red Cross Society of China's network. Anti-SARS supplies are also provided to the medical staff. With the donations received, HKRC has purchased 210,000 "Anti-SARS packs", which will be delivered to the medical staff in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Heibei and Guangdong. Part of the Anti-SARS packs have already arrived at the destinations, while the remaining are scheduled for arrival before next week. Each Anti-SARS pack includes a cap, a facemask, a protective gown, a pair of protective gloves, shoe covers and a set of guidelines and illustrations on how to correctly put on and take off the protective gear.
