New Rules for Importing Vegetable Protein into Canada

Importers of vegetable protein concentrate products into Canada are now required to ensure that their imports are free of melamine and cyanuric acid.  Upon arrival in Canada, such shipments will be subject to the following procedures:

  1. Products manufactured in mainland China will be handled in accordance with the existing policy;
  2. Importers of products manufactured elsewhere will be asked to provide a certificate of analysis* that indicates the shipment has no detectable levels of melamine and cyanuric acid.

* The certificate of analysis comprises:

  • Product, lot number and quantity that match the import documents;
  • Information to identify the laboratory is an approved facility;
  • The method of analysis;
  • Analytical results for melamine (“not detected” at 10mg per kg);
  • Analytical results for cyanuric acid (“not detected” at 10mg per kg);
  • Date of analysis; and,
  • The name and signature of the analyst.

The products will then be analyzed, and if no detectable level of melamine or cyanuric acid is found, they will be released for use. Otherwise, they will be disposed of or the shipment will be returned to its point of origin. Importers must therefore ensure their shipments are accompanied by the necessary certificates of analysis.
