( BW)(PA-FEDEX-GROUND)(FDX) FedEx Ground Safety Director Receives Top
ATA Honor; Company Awarded President's Trophy for Best Safety Program
Business Editors
PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 8, 2000--Ron Joseph, vice
president of transportation, safety and maintenance for FedEx Ground,
was recently named Safety Director of the Year by the American
Trucking Associations (ATA), a national trade group for the
transportation industry. At the same time, the safety program he
manages was honored for being among the best in the country. For the
second time in five years, FedEx Ground received the prestigious
President's Trophy.
A day-one employee with the company and its first safety director,
Joseph created the company's safety program in 1985 when FedEx Ground,
the second largest small-package ground carrier in North America, was
founded. In 1996, FedEx Ground became the first transportation company
with a team of drivers comprised entirely of independent contractors
to win the ATA President's Trophy.
"Ron has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to safety
throughout his years with the company," said Daniel J. Sullivan, FedEx
Ground founder, president and chief executive officer. "He has taken
every opportunity to advance the cause of safety throughout the
company, ensuring its place at the very top of our corporate
priorities. I am pleased to see Ron recognized in this manner by his
peers, and I am very proud of our entire team for their tremendous
efforts in safety.
"It's an honor for me to work with such a dedicated team of
employees and contractors who make safety a priority every day,"
Joseph said. "Both awards are a testament to their incredible work and
dedication."
The ATA presents the Safety Director of the Year award to the
safety professional in the trucking industry chosen the most
outstanding as voted by past winners. Entrants are judged on their
career accomplishments. The President's Trophy is presented annually
for a company's overall safety program.
Under Joseph's leadership, FedEx Ground has built a solid history
of safety achievements. Most notable among these are more than 40
first place awards in individual state contests; nine national safety
awards in ATA National Truck and Industrial Safety Contests; the
President's Trophy in 1996 and 2000; and the election of nine FedEx
Ground contractors to the America's Road Team, the ATA's elite team of
ambassadors whose charter is to promote highway safety to the public.
Don Nehring, based in Memphis, is the current Road Team member
representing FedEx Ground.
FedEx Ground is the second-largest small-package ground carrier in
North America, with an automated network of 370 distribution hubs and
local pick-up-and-delivery terminals supported by a team of 35,000
employees and contractors throughout the United States and Canada. The
company reported annual revenue of $2 billion in fiscal year 2000.
