( BW)(FEDERAL-EXPRESS)(FDX) NLRB rules FedEx remains under Railway Labor Act

    Business Editors

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 1997--Federal Express Corporation said today it has been informed that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled that FedEx and all of its employees continue to be covered by the Railway Labor Act (RLA). The ruling is consistent with every court and administrative agency decision on this issue since FedEx began operations over 25 years ago.
The RLA was enacted over 60 years ago to insure that the nation's vital transportation systems were not interrupted by local labor disputes. Congress' intent was that integrated express companies like FedEx should not be subjected to disruption due to the essential part they play in meeting critical transportation needs. As noted in the NLRB's decision, Congress last year specifically confirmed that FedEx "is an express company within the meaning of the Railway Labor Act."
Federal Express is the world's largest express transportation company providing fast and reliable services for more than 2.8 million items to 211 countries each working day. The company employs approximately 127,000 people, has 41,000 drop-off locations, and operates more than 575 aircraft, 38,000 vehicles and 550,000 Powership(R) and FedEx Ship(TM) automated shipping systems in its integrated global network. Federal Express reported revenues of $10.3 billion for its fiscal year ended May 31, 1996.
