General Questions

What is the difference between FedEx Express and FedEx Ground?

FedEx Express lets you choose from several different services so you can pick the delivery time that fits your degree of urgency. It's for shippers with high-value or time-critical shipments who need to plan on fast delivery on a specific day, by a specific time. FedEx Ground service is a cost-effective solution for routine shipments that don't need the speed of express shipping. You receive reliable delivery for packages up to 150 lbs., with the precise date of delivery based on distance from origin to destination.

Are FedEx Ground shipments backed by a Money-Back Guarantee like FedEx Express shipments?

Yes! Specifically, you can request a refund or credit of your transportation charges if your FedEx Ground shipments within the continental US don't arrive by the end of the scheduled delivery day, as published on this web site.

What is your fastest service?

It's FedEx SameDay, which is available for urgent or emergency shipments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It includes courier pickup, proactive tracking and delivery notification and can be requested by calling 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339. The international counterpart is FedEx International Next Flight., which can be requested by calling 1.800.974.7333.

What are my choices for overnight delivery?

Recognizing your deadlines can vary day to day, FedEx provides three delivery choices: FedEx First Overnight by 8 am, FedEx Priority Overnight by 10:30 am, and FedEx Standard Overnight by 3 pm. The latter is a cost-effective choice if you can wait for afternoon delivery.

What's the difference between using the FedEx Express 2-day and 3-day services and using FedEx Ground?

You would choose the FedEx Express services (FedEx 2-Day and our 3-day FedEx Express Saver) when you need to count on delivery on a specific day and by a specific time of day, no matter where in the country you are shipping to. FedEx Ground service delivery times are based on distance. It could take your ground shipment one day or five days to reach its destination (longer if it's Alaska or Hawaii), depending on where your recipient is located. Choose FedEx Ground when you want reliable delivery but timing is not as critical.

Which service would I use for residential delivery?

FedEx Express service covers every address in the US, including residential addresses. There's no need to mark anything special on your shipping label. On the other hand, FedEx Ground service is primarily business-to-business. If you want low-cost ground delivery with a money-back guarantee, use FedEx Home Delivery, which is dedicated solely to residential delivery.

Can I ship internationally with both FedEx Express and FedEx Ground?

Yes, but to differing degrees. FedEx Express has a fleet that circles the globe every day to deliver to more than 210 countries. By contrast, FedEx Ground specializes in North America, with an extensive, well-established network in Canada and Puerto Rico.

What are my choices for FedEx Express international delivery?

FedEx gives you flexibility to match the right service to your speed-to-market needs. Our premier service, FedEx International Priority, gives you superior reliability and speed (typically one, two or three business days) to points throughout the world. When you can afford a few extra days in transit, choose FedEx International Economy.

What about global freight? How fast can you move the big stuff?

The FedEx Express fleet consists of 647 aircraft - which means lots of tonnage to handle your global air-freight needs. Two express services are designed for pieces (pallets) up to 2,200 lbs.: FedEx International Priority Freight, with delivery in one, two or three business days, and FedEx International Economy Freight, with delivery within five business days.

What's the difference between international express freight services and your air-cargo services?

Our air-cargo services, known as FedEx International Express Freight (IXF) and FedEx International Airport-to-Airport, are separate from our express and ground service. These are airport-to-airport services with their own air waybill and booking procedures. And, unlike FedEx International Priority Freight and FedEx International Economy Freight, they do not offer a money-back guarantee, customs clearance, pickup or delivery.

What's the difference between the FedEx Express US freight network and the FedEx Freight network?

FedEx Express US freight services offer one-day, two-day or three-day air-freight delivery, depending on the speed you need. Delivery is time-specific, with overnight delivery by 10:30 am and second-day delivery by noon. You tender freight like your packages, using the shipping tools on fedex.com or a manual airbill. These services are for palletized pieces 151-2,200 lbs. and are backed by our Money-Back Guarantee. Pickup and delivery is available for 98% of US destinations. Our FedEx Freight operating company specializes in day-definite next-day and second-day delivery of regional less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. (Its interregional US.services provide coast-to-coast service to most points in four days.) Through a network of service centers and real-time information systems, FedEx Freight provides direct service to virtually all US ZIP codes.

What services do I use for Puerto Rico?

You would use our international services. For express shipping, you can get next-business-day delivery with FedEx International Priority, and three-business-day delivery with FedEx International Economy and FedEx International Priority Freight (selected areas). For ground shipments, FedEx International Ground provides delivery in three to seven business days.

Does FedEx offer weekend delivery?

Yes. Saturday delivery is available with FedEx Priority Overnight (tender your shipment on a Friday) and FedEx 2-Day (tender your shipment on a Thursday) in the majority of US cities. An additional fee applies. For Sunday delivery, we offer FedEx SameDay within the US and FedEx International Next Flight for international deliveries. Call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 to request.

I want to have my express package held at a FedEx location. How do I know what address to use?

Addresses and hours of FedEx locations are available on the Locations page.

I already have a FedEx Express account number. Can I use that for both FedEx Express and FedEx Ground?

Yes. Your FedEx Express account number can be used for both FedEx Express and FedEx Ground shipping. If you do not currently ship packages with FedEx Ground, you may request FedEx Ground Service by filling out a registration form or you can call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339. (There are certain requirements for FedEx Ground shipping. If you ship an average of five FedEx Ground packages per day, you can call us to arrange for a regular pick-up. If you do not meet this volume requirement, you may take your FedEx Ground packages to FedEx World Service Centers or participating FedEx Authorized ShipCenters.)

I already have an account number with FedEx Ground. I received something in the mail notifying me about a new FedEx account number. Why do I need a new one?

Before March 1, 2001, you needed two separate account numbers to ship with FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. Now, you can use one account number, which is the one we communicated to you in our mailing.

Do I have to use this single FedEx account number? I prefer to continue using the Ground number I have now. I don't do any FedEx Express shipping and don't plan on doing so.

Yes, please use the nine-digit account number that we've communicated to you. It will help us serve you better.

I don't ship FedEx Express and don't plan to. Why do I need a new account number?

Our customers benefit from our integrating certain aspects of our FedEx Express and FedEx Ground operations, such as Customer Support, invoicing, customer information databases, etc. A single account number helps facilitate this process for both customers and FedEx.

Do I need to reorder new FedEx Ground barcode labels because of this single account number?

No. You don't have to order new FedEx Ground barcode labels. Simply continue to use and reorder labels as you currently do.

I have a FedEx Ground Pick-Up Record Book that I enter my shipments into each day. I put my seven-digit shipper number in the blocks at the top of each sheet. Do I enter this nine-digit number there?

Yes, enter the nine-digit account number there.

But there are only seven blocks for the number. What do I do?

Your nine-digit number is what we need, regardless of how you enter it. You can use the blocks for the first seven digits of your single account number and write the last two digits after the blocks. Or you can utilize the space allocated for the seven digits and enter your entire nine-digit number there.

I have a FedEx automated shipping device. Do I use my previous Ground number or this single account number?

Please continue to use your current seven-digit number for FedEx Ground shipping on your automated shipping device. We will notify you when to make the change.

I've got vendors who use my account number. Are you going to notify them about this? Or is that my responsibility?

It's not possible for us to communicate to everyone who has your account number. So we'd certainly appreciate it if you would notify all of your vendors about this change.

When I'm using fedex.com and it asks me for my account number, do I use this single account number?

Correct. You have to use the account number indicated in the letter you received whether that's online or over the phone. If you have a FedEx automated shipping device, you'll continue to use your previous seven-digit number. We'll contact you with the date when you need to enter the account number indicated in the letter you received.

I have multiple accounts. How did you decide which account to match my FedEx Ground account to?

We matched your FedEx Ground account to the FedEx Express account with current shipping activity at the same address.

I have several FedEx Ground accounts and several FedEx Express accounts. Does this mean that I have to use one account number for all shipping regardless of how many FedEx Express and FedEx Ground accounts I previously used?

No, continue using your accounts as you do today.

How do I close my FedEx Ground and/or FedEx Express account number?

Call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 for assistance.
