How do I open a FedEx Express or FedEx Ground account online?

It's easy to open a FedEx account online. Answer just a few questions and you'll have a FedEx account number in minutes.

Why do I need to open an account?

If you ship regularly, open a FedEx account online and take advantage of FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.com and make managing your shipping as fast and easy as possible. Also, you will save up to 16% on eligible FedEx Express® U.S. and international services and up to 8% on eligible FedEx Ground® and FedEx Home Delivery® services.

If you ship rarely, you are not required to have a FedEx account number to create shipping labels online. However, please note that you will have to enter and authorize your credit card number for every shipment.

Is there a fee for opening a FedEx account?

There is no fee to open a FedEx account number.

We do ask that you submit a credit card number, so your billing information is tied to your FedEx account. In order to verify the billing information for each FedEx account opened, a temporary $10 hold is placed on your credit card account. The $10 hold will be removed within seven business days.

How do I open a FedEx account online?

Just click the Open an Account link on fedex.com and take advantage of FedEx Ship Manager at fedex.com and make managing your shipping as fast and easy as possible. Also, you will save 60% on eligible FedEx Freight services, up to 16% on eligible FedEx Express® U.S. and international services and up to 8% on eligible FedEx Ground® and FedEx Home Delivery® services.

Can I add additional FedEx customer numbers? 

Yes. Log in to fedex.com and click the Manage tab in the top navigation bar, then select Update My Profile and Account Management. Update your profile with additional FedEx customer numbers that you'd like to add to your account. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when your account has been updated.

Do you have company drivers?

Our fleet is made up entirely of independent owner operators and the individuals who drive for them. We do not have company drivers. If you are interested in being an independent contractor affiliated with FedEx Custom Critical, please check out our owner-operators section.

Do you have dedicated runs?

No. We are an expediter, which means that we dispatch trucks when customers call with a shipping need. We have no regularly scheduled routes.

Can I buy a truck through FedEx Custom Critical?

No. You must purchase your own truck.

What are the qualifications for an owner operator to become a contractor for FedEx Custom Critical?

Safety takes priority at FedEx Custom Critical, and we're looking for the best professional owner operators. Our general minimum requirements are:

  • No more than three moving violations within the last three years, and one or less in the previous 12 months
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical and drug test
  • A proper class CDL with HAZMAT endorsement
  • Unrestricted access to and from Canada

In order to contract with or drive for a contractor of FedEx Custom Critical, drivers must meet certain other eligibility requirements. These vary based on the size and type of vehicle: cargo van, 14 foot and 22 foot straight truck, and tractor-trailer.

What programs do you offer for contractors?

FedEx Custom Critical has a Contractor Relations department that is dedicated to making it easy for owner operators to do business with us. Our contractor relations coordinators continue to implement incentive and discount programs that help owner operators succeed. These include:

  • ASSET Club – a program that awards savings bonds to contractors based on service and accident-free operation.
  • Four Star Award – an honor given to the top 50 FedEx Custom Critical contractors who meet the award criteria for safety, availability and on-time service.
  • Negotiated discounts with certain hotels, truck stops, fuel stations and more.

In addition, our staff of contractor coordinators serves as the owner operator’s point of contact with the company, helping to answer any questions and resolve any issues.
