February 2013 – New FedEx Ground® Labels Mean Better Service Reliability

FedEx is updating and improving the FedEx Ground shipping label to be consistent with the new FedEx Express label released in 2011. Most notably, you’ll see a new barcode. This will enable us to implement new services and include more detail about each shipment right on the label. You’ll also notice a better label layout and improved barcode legibility — which means increased read rates and service reliability.

We began using the new label and barcode last month, and we will gradually be increasing production over the next few months. Here are the changes you’ll start to see:
  • The barcode length will increase from 22 to 34 characters.
  • The FedEx Ground shipper number will be located in positions 10–19 of the barcode (separate from the tracking number).
  • The tracking number will be located in positions 21–34 of the barcode.
  • The length of the tracking number will be 12 characters (with the ability to expand to 14 characters in the future).
  • Some label content and identifiers will be in new positions.
  • FedEx Home Delivery® shipping labels will no longer include a “G” identifier, just an “H.”

Answer the following questions to determine if these changes will affect your shipping and receiving processes:

  1. Do you scan FedEx Ground barcodes today as part of your business process?
  2. Do you use a custom-designed label for FedEx Ground® shipments?
  3. Do you sort FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery shipments manually?

If you answered “No” to the above questions, the barcode changes should not affect you.

If you answered “Yes” to any of the questions, please go to fedex.com/barcodeupdates to find out more about the new labels and make the transition easier. You should also be sure to inform any groups that are directly affected by these changes — like IT or shipping and receiving departments.

January 2013 – Update Your FedEx IP Addresses to Ensure Proper Information and Data Exchange

In order to improve your shipping experience with FedEx Ship Manager® Server, FedEx has built a new state-of-the-art data center which improves our reliability, disaster recovery capabilities and high availability of the servers you currently use to communicate with FedEx. Since you secure your network behind a firewall with a specific IP address containment, it will be necessary to add new IP addresses to ensure proper information and data exchange.

We ask that you alert your Technology Support teams to understand the impact of this change within your environment.

The new IP addresses are listed below. We are communicating to give you ample time to schedule your firewall changes prior to March 2013. To allow continued smooth data exchange between your systems and FedEx, please update your firewall as soon as possible by opening the following new IP addresses, connections are TCP SSL on port 443:

204.135.8.16
204.135.8.17

For validation purposes, the following FedEx IP addresses should already be open in your firewall:
199.81.196.27
199.81.197.170
199.81.216.60
199.81.216.140
199.81.217.140

The current FedEx test IP address is:
199.81.216.51

Thank you for updating your firewall(s). If you have any questions or need assistance, please call the FedEx Ship Manager Server Technical Support Center at 1.877.339.2774.

  • Validate accuracy of FedEx Ground hazardous materials shipment information before printing the paperwork.
  • Generate Shipper’s Hazardous Materials Certification forms (OP-950) and Hazardous Materials Paper forms (OP-900LL or OP-900 LG).
  • Electronically upload FedEx Ground hazardous material shipment information to FedEx systems at the time of pickup by ensuring a successful end-of-day close routine has been executed.
FedEx Ground initiated this mandate to enhance the safety and efficiency of processing, managing, and transporting hazardous materials shipments. The new requirement will not only eliminate data entry errors caused by paper manifest information being re-keyed into the system, but it will also enable FedEx to easily provide accurate information to emergency responders, in case of an incident.

February 2012 – Read About Shipping Hazardous Materials To, From and Within Alaska and Hawaii.

If you use FedEx to ship hazardous materials, ORM-D (Other Regulated Materials for Domestic transport) or Limited Quantity shipments to, from or within Alaska and Hawaii, you must ship them via FedEx Express, not FedEx Ground.

Since reaching Alaska and Hawaii destinations requires air travel for certain legs of the route, regulatory restrictions mean you can’t use FedEx Ground to ship your hazardous materials, ORM-D or Limited Quantity packages to, from or within Alaska and Hawaii.

However, FedEx Express accepts shipments prepared for air travel under 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations, which require specific packaging, labeling, documentation and processing for hazardous materials and dangerous goods packages shipped to, from and within Alaska and Hawaii.

FedEx has sent the attached communications to FedEx hazardous materials shippers to inform them of the regulations. Click here to view the customer communications.

FedEx SmartPost Is on Track for Intelligent Mail Package Barcode Compliance by January 7, 2013

The U.S. Postal Service® (USPS) released the final Intelligent Mail® Package Barcode (IMpb) specifications on September 27. The IMpb is a regulatory barcode format that provides better end-to-end visibility and service performance. While the new format will have the same symbology as the current one, it will have new data elements that define mail class, subclass and extra services within the barcode. All shipping providers using the USPS will be required to use the IMpb format.

What you should do:
To be compliant by January 7, 2013, you will need to upgrade to FedEx Ship Manager® Server version 12.0.1 that will be available in the summer of 2012. FedEx Web Services customers will automatically receive the IMpb functionality between January 22, 2012 and March 5, 2012.

Please ensure that your management, development and support staff are aware of this information as FedEx SmartPost is working through the solution and will provide more details and requirements in future communications. We will continue to provide updates on the USPS IMpb final specifications to ensure that you receive a smooth and timely transition to the IMpb barcode to be compliant.

August 2009 - FedEx implements specific information security standards. FedEx is committed to promoting a safe and secure environment in which to conduct business and deliver superior service to our customers. To that end, the company has implemented specific information security standards to prevent incidents which could affect a company’s ability to do business or undermine its reputation.

The scope of the information security standards is to reduce risk for FedEx and FedEx customers by protecting confidential information that is entrusted to FedEx, and its direct or indirect subsidiaries.

FedEx is extending these standards to further protect customer account numbers from unauthorized use. As part of this effort, FedEx is limiting the exposure of shipper account numbers on shipping labels. The safeguards outlined in this document provide direction to help customers avoid the inadvertent release of confidential account information and minimize risks to FedEx and our customers.

Go to the Customer Protection Center Web site at fedex.com/us/security/ to learn more about how FedEx works to help protect you and how you can protect yourself.

FedEx Ship Manager® Server

In a future release of FedEx Ship Manager® Server, the account number will always be masked and will not be an option for customers to turn on. Now, however, FedEx Ship Manager Server gives you the capability to hide or mask the account number within the Configuration Utility. Refer to the FedEx Ship Manager Server documentation for additional details on masking account numbers. If your customers use a version of FedEx Ship Manager Server software below 6.8, this capability does not exist and customers will need to upgrade to a more recent software version.

If your integrated solution supports custom labels and builds the label, you must make the change in your software, or provide information to your customers on how to mask the account number themselves. The instructions in the FedEx documentation will not work with the customer label feature.

If you need additional information, please call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 or go to the FedEx Developer Resource Center at fedex.com/developer. Thank you for choosing FedEx. We appreciate your business and look forward to delivering the service you expect for all your shipments, large or small.
