Team FedEx has kicked of the 2009 state championship season in high gear! The first weekend in Arizona solidified the winning nature of Team FedEx with three first-place finishers named in the competition held in Phoenix.
2009 marks a milestone in the competition with the Step Van class becoming a nationally recognized class. The state winners will compete in the National Truck Driving Championships held in Pittsburgh, August 18-22.
Sean Saxon, a FedEx Ground contractor based in Tempe, finished at the top of the Step Van class. Fellow Tempe-based FedEx Ground contractor Joe Gross captured the state crown in the Straight Truck class. And rounding out our trio of winners was FedEx Freight driver Brad Clyne, who won the Twins class for the second year in a row.
The winning continued with three second-place and three third-place finishes. Tempe-based FedEx Ground contractors Dale Angle and Mike Sanchez completed the sweep in the Step Van class with second - and third - place finishes. FedEx Freight driver Charlie Woodland, an 11-time Arizona state champion, grabbed the second - place spot in the Straight Truck class. Frank Logan and Tim O’Donnell, both drivers for FedEx Express, took second and third in the 5-Axle class. Returning 2008 National Rookie of the Year Rob Romando, a driver for FedEx National LTL in Phoenix, finished third in the 3-Axle class.
FedEx also took home two special awards as Sean Saxon won the Rookie of the Year honor and also posted the Highest Driving Course score.
With three winners named, the road to Pittsburgh continues with next week’s competition in Louisiana.
