Printer-Friendly Team FedEx Doubles Number of Champs in Stellar Weekend of Competition

In three state TDCs held May 1-2, five additional FedEx drivers – including the first from FedEx Express this season – earned the right to compete at the NTDC in August.

New Mexico
In Albuquerque, FedEx State Captain Marv Caton says the event started out with calm weather before Mother Nature stirred up the wind and darkened the sky. However, the crazy weather didn’t discourage Team FedEx as our drivers picked up nine top-three finishes.

Dion Saiz (FedEx Freight, Albuquerque) not only won the Twins title but also became the first FedEx driver this year to earn a coveted Grand Champion title by posting the highest score among the winners of each class. Fellow FedEx Freight Albuquerque-based driver Dan Bruch won his third state title in four years by finishing first in the 5-Axle class. Oscar Delgado, a driver for FedEx Ground contractor Ruben Martinez (El Paso, Texas), captured the top spot in the Step Van class after placing second last year.

Amru Torres (driver for FedEx Ground contractor Ruben’s Trucking Inc. in San Elizario, Texas) and FedEx Freight driver Brooks Washburn (Albuquerque) finished second and third, respectively, in the 4-Axle class. In the Straight Truck competition, Farmington-based FedEx Freight drivers Joe Bernal and Nathan Lovato placed second and third. FedEx Ground contractors Robert Thorn (Durango) and Jason Reyes (San Elizario, Texas) completed the FedEx sweep of the Step Van class.

In addition, FedEx Ground was presented with the Safety Fleet Million Mile Award from the New Mexico Trucking Association.

Tennessee
In the Volunteer State, FedEx Express driver Brady Todd (Memphis) captured both the Step Van and Rookie of the Year titles. He was joined in the winners’ circle by David Magee (FedEx Freight, Dresden), who won the Tank Truck class. Nashville-based drivers John Harrington (FedEx National LTL) and Mark Copas (FedEx Freight) finished third in the 3-Axle and 5-Axle classes, respectively.

Idaho
Three Boise-based FedEx drivers scored top-three finishes in the Gem State. Jeremy Alt (FedEx National LTL) and Randy Schwasinger (FedEx Freight) were second and third, respectively, in the Straight Truck class. Matt Housley (FedEx Freight) finished second in the 3-Axle class.

Texas – Tyler Regional
At the first of four regional competitions in Texas, FedEx Freight drivers Dan Hunt (Lufkin) and Joe Cox (Tyler) posted second-place finishes in the Twins and 3-Axle classes, respectively. Both have earned spots in the Texas Finals on June 12-13.

Next up for Team FedEx are the state competitions in Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and North Dakota on May 8-9. Best of luck to all of our competitors!
