Printer-Friendly A Big Weekend for FedEx!


FedEx drivers and contractors made their mothers proud this Mother’s Day weekend, capturing 10 first-place titles and a multitude of second- and third-place finishes. This gives FedEx a total of 20 competitors moving on to the NTDC in Pittsburgh.

Mississippi
FedEx made its presence known in Mississippi, notching three first-, two second- and four third-place finishes, the coveted Grand Champion title and the Rookie of the Year award.

John Smith Jr., the reigning National Tank Truck Champion, earned his spot among the FedEx Aces with a first-place win in the Tank Truck class. John also took home the Grand Champion award for Mississippi.

Team FedEx swept the Step Van class when contractors Rodney Talbert (McComb), Uriah Wiggins (Jackson) and Donald Smith (Tupelo) took home all three top trophies, respectively. It was a big finish for Rodney as he also won the Rookie of the Year award.

Matt Wilson, a driver for John Smith Jr. Trucking Inc., rounded out the list of top finishers for FedEx Ground with his third place in the 3-Axle class. FedEx Ground also took home the Team Trophy in Mississippi.

Also on his way to Pittsburgh is Jackson-based FedEx Freight driver Tommy Boyanton. Tommy won the 3-Axle class.

Joining the list of FedEx Freight top performers was Bobby Lane (Jackson, second place, 5-Axle) and Jacky Henry (Grenada, third-place, 4-Axle) and Maxie Wallace (Jackson, third place, Flatbed).

Kentucky
FedEx emerged from the Bluegrass State with two state titles and multiple other top-three finishes.

John Willinger earned the right to defend his title, repeating as 5-Axle state champ in the same class this year. Fellow FedEx Freight driver Bertram Buntain from Lexington also topped the winners’ list with a first -place finish in the Twins class.

FedEx Freight Louisville -based drivers David Proctor, Wayne Crowder and Brad Mertz took home second -place finishes in the 3-Axle, Flatbed and Tank Truck classes , respectively.

Mark Campbell (FedEx Express, Hebron) finished second in the Straight Truck class. And rounding out the winners was Derek Perez , a contractor for Ground in Independence. Derek finished third in the 5-Axle Sleeper class.

North Carolina
The competition in the Tar Heel State was a good one for FedEx, with three more first-place winners on their way to the NTDC.

Jake Brown, Neil Morgan, and Matt Alberts all will be packing for Pittsburgh this August with top finishes in the 4-Axle, Tank Truck and Straight Truck classes, respectively. All three are drivers for FedEx Express domiciled in Greensboro.

Also finishing among the top performers were FedEx Ground contractorKenneth Stack (Greensboro) , FedEx Express driver Andy Heffner (Greensboro) and FedEx Freight driver William Goodson (Charlotte) with second-place finishes in the Straight Truck, Twins and Tank Truck classes, respectively.

Basher Pierce, one of five drivers from North Carolina selected as a state Road Team Captain for 2009-2010, finished third in the Flatbed class. Basher is a driver for FedEx Freight from Greensboro. Also representing FedEx Freight was John Cecil with a third place in the 5-Axle class. Rounding out the top finishers was FedEx National LTL driver David Harris (Charlotte), who took third in the 3-Axle class.

North Dakota
FedEx State Captain Zach Thomas said the day started out with somewhat uncooperative weather with temperatures 20 degrees below predictions and a stiff north wind to add to the chilly conditions. Luckily , the rain held off until the last two drivers were on the course.

However, it was all well worth it at the awards ceremony, as Fargo-based FedEx Freight drivers took home two state titles t, the Grand Champion honor, a second-place trophy and awards for high score on the Pre-Trip Inspection and driving course.

Scott Meyers was the big winner for Team FedEx , taking home the Grand Champion trophy, first place in the 4-Axle class and the Highest Driving Course Score honor.

Returning champ John Janousek claimed first-place in the 5-Axle competition and the and Pre-Trip Inspection award.

Dean Eklund finished second in the Straight Truck class.

Georgia
Lawrenceville-based FedEx National LTL drivers Lynn Combs and Frank Fernandez notched second- and third-place finishes in the Straight Truck and 4-Axle classes, respectively. FedEx Freight drivers Jerry Williams (Valdosta) and Dewell Barnard (Atlanta) went home with second- and third-place finishes in Twins and 3-Axle, respectively.

Next up for Team FedEx are the state competitions in Alabama, Alaska, South Dakota, Delaware and Maine and regional competitions in California and Texas on May 15-16. Best of luck to all of our competitors!
